Bluetooth not working on my Dell Inspiron 5680

Not too sure what happened but my Bluetooth on my Dell Inspiron 5680 tower has stopped working in the past six hours and or has just stopped showing up in Device manager. Just a little upset, I have reinstalled and attempted to install a older version also of the driver and with no luck. In Device manager im Getting Unkown USB (Device Descriptor Request Failed). . And A request for the USB device descriptor has failed.

does this mean the Bluetooth device has gone bad or fried? Can someone tell me where the adapter would be for this device on the board ?

You can probably get a service manual that shows you where everything is. Dell produce them for all the models I have had.

Go to Dell support, put in your Dell Service tag or let them detect it. Do not try to avoid identifying the computer by its Service tag; it is what will ensure that you will only see & download the correct drivers.

You can also let them detect updated drivers or, as I do, you can look manually and so avoid them reinstalling any of their useless utilities that you have uninstalled.
If you do look manually, set the list into newest first order.
Download your Bluetooth driver & install it. Nothing in your description makes me think you need to use an older driver but you'll probably find them if you keep scrolling down the drivers list.

If you look at the tabs on that download page you will see a link to documentation. That's where you should find your service manual.
I suggest you re-seat [pull out & put back in] your Bluetooth adapter [which might well be a combined Bluetooth-WiFi adapter].


I once had my Bluetooth adapter disappear on a Dell Inspiron 7779 that was only two months old.
I ran all Dell's diagnostics utilities and they could not detect it either.
I rang Dell support and they said it was a software issue that was not covered by the warranty. I already knew they were a bunch of useless tossers but that really took the biscuit.
I used my emergency USB mouse instead.
The next day, Bluetooth returned. It has remained fine throughout the five years that have since passed.

Generally speaking, the Bluetooth adapters on Notebooks and those Desktops with BT have it as part of the Wireless/Wi-Fi adapter. All the Desktops I've seen with it and my ASUS used to have the Wireless as an option, used a PCIe X1 or X4 slot on the motherboard, in shopping for a new Desktop for Win11 I see that more common. Dell certainly should have drivers, check at www.support.dell.com and have your Service Tag available which can be a sticker on the case or in the BIOS. I have a few Dell machines. What I have on my Vostro 14" Notebook from 5 months ago, check yours in the Bluetooth section, I have nothing about BT in USB devices except on the occasions I have to use a BT USB dongle when a BT device isn't installed such as on older computers:

On all of my devices the Bluetooth has always been part of the Wi-Fi adapter. If you want, you can buy a USB Bluetooth adapter.

It is apart of the Wi-Fi Adapter on this computer. . I have been using the Bluetooth feature without issues for years, just the other day or night it stopped working and or now I get the other USB issue in Device Manager in which I belive is the Bluetooth device in some error or something . . Windows simply wanted to me to run the Windows 11 installer tool . . which I am not going to do quite yet there should be a direct way to fix this.

I did download the drivers from Dell and attempted to install seems like the versions are up to date but the bluetooth is just gone . . and now there is that USB device error or thing in Device Manager. . Which IS NOT A USB device that is plugged in or so it seems anyway.

So get the Service manual and try re-seating the adapter - see post #2.

I cannot say what issue is but can suggest ways to troubleshoot.

1) create a live linux drive and see if you can see usb drive from that. If so, adapter is still working.

2) create a dual boot clean install of windows, and then if it works, somehow current OS has corrupted. If it works, export drivers.

I had an issue a couple of years ago where I could not see the wifi card (which double up as BT) - reason turned out that the driver was old and not signed, so was being rejected. I was able to install latest driver I could find via advanced startup and wifi worked.

However, I had to do this every time I started Windows. Eventually I managed to find a signed driver and all worked well.

Do you have a restore point {or better an image backup) from before the point where issue arose? I would try this first.

Yeah I downloaded the driver package from Dell and upzipped it and forced the install or the driver for the Blutooth and it states that the Driver is not signed. which is weird comming directly from dell . . Or is it weird???

I had an issue the other day with a Notebook I was working on where a previously paired Mouse wouldn't connect again, also couldn't connect a different brand [I have 3 brands on hand]. Suspecting the adapter had failed I plugged in an IOGear BT dongle and the mouse worked, got the work completed. I then shut it down and unplugged the dongle, on a hunch I restarted the Notebook and tested the BT again with the original mouse and it worked. Never did get the cause but client is satisfied.

Dell drivers are normally supplied as .exe files that you run [I know that unzipping is involved in what it does but that should be transparent to you].

Isn't yours supplied as an .exe? Please would you post a link to its details page - click on the down arrow to the right of the entry in the list of drivers on your Dell webpage then you'll see a link to its See details page.

To add, many of the driver files I've gotten from Dell are named with an R and number, usually rename after the download to identify easier.

The latest WiFi-BT driver I could find for an Inspiron 5680 [or Inspiron 5676, if that's what you meant] is for a Qualcomm QCA61x4A / QCA9377 combined WiFi-BT card.
It is supplied as an exe file that you run.

Is that the download you've used?

Yes i used the exe Windows 11 actually comes up with a WARNING during the install saying the drive is not signed and or not reconized and asks if I would like to continue. . . and I do. . .then it finishes .. When running the app it does offer you the option to extract the files OR install using their setup app. . I did try both

I did end up just spending like 12.00 on a new Bluetooth USB adapter . . Bluetooth 5.0 . . . but yeah still I would like my dell to work magically

You might be happier with the range and speed of the Bluetooth dongle. I disabled my onboard Bluetooth in favor of a longer-range Bluetooth 5.0 dongle.
