Boot time increased since last Windows update

Hi.

Since the last Windows update on Tuesday, my boot time from turn on to having my gadgets loaded has gone from 15 seconds to well over a minute. The update failed the first time and then redid itself. Other than that, no problems. I am just wondering if this long boot is the result of the failed update, and being as it did fail like that should I remove it and reapply it? Or will that mess up things even more?

I appeal to your great minds.

IMO, if everything is working, I would accept the longer boot time and wait until 25h2 upgrade comes out in a couple of months. I will say that my cold boot time has been about 1 min 45 sec since day 1.

You might check your startup apps and disable the ones you do not want loading at startup. Device Manager>Startup apps.

I've done the preview update. I preload a number of apps that many might not: Edge, 1Password, OneDrive, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Security, Microsoft PC Manager, Bing Wallpaper, Copilot.

I set a stop watch and on "My Computer" with my computer turned Shift + OFF (turns off Fast Startup), pressing the start button to fully logged in and ready to work was 37 seconds.

Hey, you can do following checks to reduce boot time -

1) Reduce your startup programs (run automatically when your Computer/PC boots up). You can do it by going to task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
2) Update your system's drivers.
3) Enable the fast boot in BIOS.

In my experience, if there is a boot performance issue after a major update, it's because a driver becomes incompatible with the new update.
Try to update your drivers.

If it didn't work, then I can try to analyze your boot trace to identify the root cause. You can find instructions to record a boot trace:

I have the same problem with this update, if I remove it all is faster again.

Same issue, Corsair iCUE takes over a minute to start once at the desktop, used to be instant. Before updating to 26100.4770 there were no issues

The Cumulative update previews are optional, the real one comes out 2 weeks later, I just wait until the real one.
So your efforts as a Beta tester are much appreciated.

Cumulative updates take a while after Power On/Restarts. So you need to wait a while before conclusions.

My Power On boot is around 16 secs and has been for 3 years.

All I do is look in the Task Manager > Startup Apps, if any App puts something in there then that App is configured from it's settings.
No system mods/tweaks whatever are used.

If it really did coincide with the update then its to much of a coincidence. I believe you use Macrium and this kind of situation is where Macrium comes into its own. Roll back and try again. You have a current backup?

Uninstalling updates and trying again would be the last option imo. Once things start to go wrong you really need to go back to a known good starting point.

If by chance you do not have a viable Macrium image then make one now and before trying to fix things.

Both computers you have should boot in less than 20 sec
I have a 4th gen laptop and a 6 gen desktop and both boots under 25 sec

when was the last time you ran Disk Cleanup (%windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe) ? A huge number of files on the temp folders can slow the startup

Open Task Manager and switch to Startup Apps section on the left pane. There you may see your BIOS bootup time.

Mine is reported as 12.6 seconds. Included in this time span is 5 seconds for pressing Del key allowance to enter into BIOS and another 5 seconds for dual-boot option selection. Remaining bootup time is 2.6 seconds. I am not sure if Task Manager reports correctly because bootup time seems to be only 2.6 seconds.

Good advice from all of you, but I think that most of you misunderstood my initial post.

My BIOS time has not changed. What has changed is that my PC is now suddenly churning when it gets into Windows. THAT is the part that has lengthened considerably. I have gone from an aproximatle 15 to 20 seconds from BIOS to full boot to well over a minute (sometimes two). Nothing is any different in my start up apps. The only change made to the PC was the Cumulative update preview for 24H2 that ws just released.

I am going to remove the update and see if that helps.

I would check the Event Viewer for events with timestamps right after the last boot. This might help identify the root cause of the delays.

What does this do? PC gets to the desktop almost immediately, but the iCUE takes longer to load than before this update. Nothing else has changed. No errors are listed in Event Viewer.

If it is the session startup and boot time which is delayed, you try to add those keys in the HKCU branch of the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize]
"StartupDelayInMSec"=dword:00000001
"WaitforIdleState"=dword:00000000

I experienced a significant delay with autostart applications right after a recent update, but this instantly resolved the issue. It’s possible that gadget loading times are also impacted by this.

It's important to avoid using a "0" value for "StartupDelayInMSec." Use at least "1" to ensure it works properly.

I experienced a significant delay with autostart applications right after a recent update, but this instantly resolved the issue. It’s possible that gadget loading times are also impacted by this.

It's important to avoid using a "0" value for "StartupDelayInMSec." Use at least "1" to ensure it works properly.
