Solved BSOD 0% - No minidump file

I've been getting this crash for a couple weeks, roughly once every 12 hours of computer uptime. After the first couple, I did not recall installing any new software or updating Windows (although there was a Win update some weeks before the crashes started).

There is no discernable correlation between what I am doing and when it crashes. But perhaps that makes sense, since the crash is unusual. The error was CRITICAL_PROCESS-DIED. BSOD stays at 0% - No minidump file. I'm not sure what to make of that. Any ideas?

For dumps to be produced, The following should be correct




Page file must be on the same drive as your operating system


Page file base allocation size must be greater than installed physical RAM


Windows Error Reporting (WER) system service should be set to MANUAL


Set page file to system managed on the OS drive


Set system crash/recovery options to "kernel memory dump"


User account control must be running.


Sometimes SSD drives with older firmware do not create DMPS (update firmware)


Cleaner applications like Ccleaner delete DMP files, so don't run them until you are fixed.




Bad Physical RAM may prevent the data from being saved and written to a file on reboot. If you suspect bad RAM, run Memtest from this wiki




Full memory dumps can also be deleted (in win 7) if your HD space is under 25 gigs, but if you configured your system as the above suggests, you should not be generating full dumps.

The computer log files reported BSOD with bugcheck EF however there were no dump files created during the crashes.

There were approximately 15 missed BIOS upgrades.

4) The HD Full error scan can run overnight while sleeping

Thanks. It started crashing more often than once/hour. It crashed while I was at the F8 startup Boot Menu. I figured not a lot of software was running, so ran a memory test which was fine, and put in an old graphics card. I'm going to use it a while to see if the crashes stop. So far, so good. If it crashes again, I'll upload the rest of the requested data.

If there was a study somewhere about causes of BSODs, I'd wager that graphics cards/drivers/applications would be at the top of the list.

That's my experience. It's far above memory problems, but at least it is easy to test for memory problems. The inexpensive, used graphics card I put in was bought exactly for the purpose I'm using it for. I've had memory fail before, but I don't feel the need to keep a second set of memory on hand.
