I think I've tracked down a possible source. The trick was not to Google for the name wuaservx but for "Windows Update Extended Service". The only hit for that points to an apparently perfectly clean and legitimate utility called AnWave.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

A cleanup utility? I have AMD FirePro M4150 installed on my mobile workstation along with the Radeon Settings Lite software.

Feel no need to remove them.

And I think you've solved the mystery as on June 16, 2024 - even though I did google both "wuauservx" and "Windows Update Service Extended"
without any results.

I did not install AnWave though because I extracted the AnWave installer with WinRAR and ran the AnWave.exe file so AnWave was not even installed on the system but I used AnWave because of the post here:

even though I was not running Windows 11 24H2 and already had the AC-3 codec but because of post #7 in the same thread where it said "anything referencing DolbyDecMFT is broken because its renamed to DolbyDecMFT_Redirect."

Now the question is what does that service really do and why no one else is using it?

I completely forgot about this as I never installed AnWave and only ran the AnWave.exe file similar to a portable app as after I was recovering later in the day from deleting the storage controller drivers in an attempt to update a version mislabeled Intel RST Storage drivers, it caused GSODs with inaccessible boot device before Windows managed to fix itself and ofcourse the timestamp matches.

That was not the reason people are using AnWave now.... I will quote from that post "Windows 11, version 24H2, the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows. Now, you can install Microsoft Dolby Digital Decoder/Encoder MFT support into Windows 11 24H2 Build 26100 via AnWave Windows Key-Point." and even though I was not running Windows 11 24H2 but the latest Windows 11 Beta which was still 23H2 and already had the AC-3 codec, someone else in the same thread said "anything referencing DolbyDecMFT is broken because its renamed to DolbyDecMFT_Redirect."

Did you actually install it because I extracted the AnWave installer with WinRAR and ran the AnWave.exe file so AnWave was not even installed on the system.

No, even though the downloaded file is called 'Setup' all it does is unpack the AnWave files to a folder of your choice, the same thing as you did with WinRAR.

According to the author: "How to install AnWave? AnWave is portable. Download the AnWave self-extracting file to extract AnWave to a specified location."

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. I actually tried to extract it by running the .exe and was trying to put it as a subfolder called AnWave_v2.9.5.12_20240614_Stable_Release_LS2_Installer when I did the browsing and then added a new folder with that name but all it did was create either AnWave_v2.9.5.12_20240614_Stable_Release_LS2_Installer\new folder or
new folder\AnWave_v2.9.5.12_20240614_Stable_Release_LS2_Installer so I did it with WinRAR instead.

But if it is a portable, it shouldn't be installing services.

The wuauservx.exe service is a locks the "Pause Updates" delay date so that it does not reset when you click the "Continue Updates" button (Or click the Delay weeks option box in Windows Update settings) in Windows Update.

It's will only lock the delayed date if you enable the "Pause a system from receiving feature updates" or "Pause a system from receiving quality updates" option in Windows Key-Point.

1. Open Windows Key-Point.
2. Enables "Always prompt to install Windows Update Service Extended" option.
3. Click "Clean up the Windows Update Service Extended" > "Uninstall" button.

The pathname selected may be a bugs.

I think the "Always prompt to install Windows Update Service Extended" should be made default so the user is aware of it. > This is a good idea. Next ver will enabled by default.

Thank you for the explanation. The only puzzle remaining is where you got wuauservx.exe from. Its 10.0.26100.202 build number suggests it is part of Microsoft's germanium platform, the base on which 24H2 is being built. I don't see it in any of my PCs running Insider 24H2 26100.xxxx builds, and there's no mention of it on any MS site as far as I (or Google) can see.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround.

    In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround.
    Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.
    In-place upgrade to 24H2 using hybrid 23H2/24H2 install media.
    Upgraded to 25H2 by Enablement Package.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

It's not a Microsoft service, I named it because it is related to Windows Update. I refer to the Windows SDK and use the service made by Visual Studio. Mainly used for "pause updates" date will not be reset. to call Windows Update if the "updates paused" date has changed in registry.

His post on AnWave 2024 | AMD Radeon Software Customize Setup | Advanced Cleanup Utility - GPU Cleanup Tool has a extra line he didn't copy here:
"I made this service mainly to control Windows Update to pause updates." which explains why it's only in AnWave.
