I have WIN 11 /LM dual boot machine with the OSs on separate drives. Each drives is divided in two, OS and Data. Only the Liinux Mint OS partition is ex4. All others are NTFS. Some time ago I got help on making shortcuts to give me access between the Linux drive Data partition and my Windows laptop through my home wireless network. However, now I want to make a shortcut on the windows drive of the dual-boot machine to that folder the Linux drive. It is within the same machine so no wireless needed.

For example, the location of the folder in Linux Mint would be, "/home/username/Desktop/topfolder/targetfolder."

How would I access this from Windows on this machine?

I'm posting this on the Linux forums also.

I'm not totally clear on what you're looking to do, but the easiest way to create a shortcut of a folder in Windows is right-click on the folder, select Send to, and then select Desktop (create shortcut)

You can then place the shortcut in another location other than the Desktop.

Share folder under the Mint and map it as network drive under Windows. Guide from Linux Mint forum.

Both disks should be visible to which ever OS you boot into, so yes and there's nothing special to the normal, create shortcut process

Myself, I don't advise it. I used to play around with Windows/Linux like that (accessing data from one OS to the other) and eventually there would always be an issue often resulting in the loss of one or both of the OS. My advice is to keep your boot straps separate and don't let the right hand know what the left hand is doing. I've been running Linux on a multi-boot system for years and years without issue this way. Rebooting from one OS to the other and copying the data onto a USB drive first to be moved to a separate OS may be a bit of an inconvenience but it's a whole lot safer IMO.

if you try and create a short cut from your Linux drive on to your Windows system
Windows wont be able to read it as the short cut is directed to an ext4 drive and Windows cant read/write or see the ext4 format
i beleive that there is software that can be installed on Windows to read the ext4 format but i have never used it.

on the other hand a short cut from your Windows drive on to your Linux drive
Linux can read as Linux can read and write to/from an NTFS format.
best of luck Steve ..

I fail to see the complexity of this situation. If I'm understanding the OP correctly, there are two physical drives, each with two partitions; one for the OS & one for Data. The Data partition on the physical drive that also happens to have the Linux OS Partition is formatted in NTFS. Windows will be able to see that partition and would/could assign a drive letter to it using Disk Management. That Data 'drive' will be accessible in File Explorer, so there really shouldn't be any issue/complexity involved here. No special process should be required to create a shortcut to a either a particular folder, or the root directory on that 'drive' within Windows.

Thanks for the link. The instructions are what I did to create the Win laptop short cut. It is not working for this, but I'm sure it's because I'm entering something wrong.

You would think so. I did. I'm still learning. The target folder is in a shared folder on the Linux Mint Desktop. I cannot navigate to it through it windows like I can other folders on the drive. I have a shortcut on my Win Laptop that accesses the folder on my wireless network, (as per the Rico's Link) but I can't get it to work this time doing the same process on the dual-boot windows drive. Unfortunately my typing is atrocious, so anything I do in Linux terminal is always a fiasco as I type incorrect characters. The LM folder share is working as I can access it from the Win11 laptop. And I assume should work for the other WIN machines. But does not. I could have a slash or some character wrong. Thanks for your response, I'll get back to it later.

Duh, here's a thought? The folder I want to access is "/home/username/Desktop/topfolder/targetfolder." I'm now wondering if LM must be running to be able to see/access it??

e.g. The shortcut on my Win Laptop works to accesses the LM folder via my wireless network. But that laptop is communicating with the computer when it is booted in into LM. When I'm booted into Windows, the LM OS is not booted. Perhaps the shares, etc., are not available to Windows because the OS itself is not running?

Pardon my ignorance, but I was thinking I could just link to the target folder from Windows by just navigating to "/home/username/Desktop/topfolder(shared)/targetfolder."

Now I'm trying something else. I copied the shared folder to the NFTS drive/partition that is visible when I'm booted in to windows, and I can access those files. I'd like to adjust the Laptop link to find the folder on that drive when the machine is booted into Linux. I'm not sure what I have to do to the Windows link/drive mapping. Perhaps this is also a question got LM forum?

have you considered a small partition on a drive where you can store folders/files and both operating system can share and see the partition.

just a thought

Exactly what is formatted in NTFS on the drive in question? Are you saying /home is formatted in NTFS?

For the record, what @XxXxX posted above is what I envisioned actually existed as the Data Partition on the drive with the Linux OS.
