can I move software from a Reflect backup to my new computer?

Let's say on my old dead computer was ProgramX. I have a Macrium mrimg backup of the whole dead computer. But I no longer can find the installation disc for ProgramX. If I merely copy the files to my new computer, ProgramX won't start. Apparently it needs to be installed, not just pasted.

Can I install ProgramX to my new computer somehow? I think I saw some software recently that claims to do that, but I dont remember the name.

Thanks.

What you are thinking about is... "Migration".

But these days on Win 10 and newer.. you can just restore the whole backup to the new computer.
Windows will take care of the drivers, for the most part.

You may be able to download ProgramX from the official site. Of course you will need your product key to reactivate it.

If it were me, I'd contact them and explain the situation. That the old computer is dead and you need the program on your new one. Most OEMs are pretty compliant with folks who have registered their product.

I'm pretty sure it needs to be "installed'.
Now if it was just the program installer... he could bring that to the new comp then run it.

You could get the program folder and bring that over... but without the associated registry files...



I and quite a few others have just restored the entire backup to the new computer.
It's always smart to export the new computer's drivers, first.
That way, IF Windows can't find a particular driver... you'll have it handy.

Yes, installing writes registry entries required by the program. Just copying the files rarely works.

Now if you told us what 'ProgramX' actually was, then we might be able to find a copy of the install disk for you.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

You've got a bunch of different responses -- but let me try to answer your original question of if you could use Macrium Reflect (MR) to migrate an app from one machine (or an image of that machine) to another -- and the simple answer is NO. MR is an imaging and restore tool, not an app migration tool. You migrate ALL the apps installed on the original machine, not selected ones.

There are specific tools for doing this -- but they require (1) installing the tool on the old machine, (2) creating a migration file containing the components you want to migrate, (3) installing the same tool on the new machine, (4) loading the migration file to the new machine, and (5) reinstalling the components from that migrated file. I've used the two most common of these apps, and they both work this same way.

Thus, if the original machine is unavailable, you can't use these tools, either.

Paragon is a kind of Win PE software. just boot and go. no need to install it.

It depends on how critical the ProgramX for you. and what's its old OS. Windows 11/10 would be much easier. Windows 7 is feasible. but if it's worth or not, upto user.

Although the original hardware no longer exists, an image of it does. And by using Macrium viBoot that image can be run as virtual machine. Bob1212's profile say he has Pro, so a Hyper-V VM would be to obvious choice. Migration software could then be installed and run on this virtual machine, just as if the old machine was still available.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.
