I believe I have done everything to activate Windows 11 on a new computer, including removing my legal Windows 10 on my Microsoft account, where the new computer is now listed. The correct way to do it is obviously missing on the web. What is not missing, whether you look to the right, to the left, straight ahead or over your shoulder, is the offer to buy a new Win 11 license for $129.99. As generous as that offer is, I would rather transfer my legal Windows 10 "license" to my new Windows 11 computer. Would anyone know what else I could try? Oh, by the way, I have gotten a prompt to activate. Ha!!!

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I believe I have done everything to activate Windows 11 on a new computer, including removing my legal Windows 10 on my Microsoft account....

That was unfortunate. The way to transfer a digital licence from your old machine to a new one is to use the Activation Troubleshooter and tell it that you have changed hardware, This however requires your old PC to still be a listed device in your MS account.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Bree is correct but if your old device activated from an old windows 7 OEM license key (ie you upgraded windows 7 to 10 during the time MS offered the free upgrade) I do not think that MS would allow the license to be transferred to another device as MS no longer accepts Windows 7 license keys to activate 10 or 11..If that be the case, do as @Ghot suggested; buy a cheap license key and get on with life.

Now if you had a RETAIL license for Windows 10 attached to that old device, the license could be used to activate Windows 11 on a new device using the activation troubleshooter (as long as you have the license key).

There is too much unknown here. Information about the old device and information about the new device would be helpful.

Bree is correct but if your old device activated from an old windows 7 OEM license key (ie you upgraded windows 7 to 10 during the time MS offered the free upgrade) I do not think that MS would allow the license to be transferred to another device as MS no longer accepts Windows 7 license keys to activate 10 or 11.
If the PC got its digital licence for the free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 then it does not have the original W7 key installed. That was replaced by the generic Windows 10 key during the upgrade, and it activates from the digital licence it was given, stored on Microsoft's activation servers. This digital licence will activate W10 and W11, it makes no distinction. Nor does it seem to keep any record of how you got the digital licence.

MS ended the free activation from W7 at the end of September 2023.

In 2024 I transferred a digital licence that had been obtained by upgrading from W7 to W10. Not only that, but this was an OEM W7 that had been upgraded, not a Retail key that I had bought.

Once a PC has a digital licence MS doesn't seem to have any record (or care) how it got it. All digital licences activate W10/W11 and it seems that all can be transferred.

@HansL

Well here's ten points just for filling out your computer specs. :-)

And if all else fails... you can get a product key for $7.97... (it's legit)

Ghot, can you show me a site that has a legit product key for that or other low price (I see a lot of places with very cheap keys, but I do not know how reliable they are)? Thanks in advance!

Any time one buys a cheap license, one takes a chance on it not activating. @Ghot gave you the link to our forum sponser site where many of us got ours.
Oy, missed that it was "my" link -- thought it was a generic one got Ghot's posts. Thanks!

Ghot, can you show me a site that has a legit product key for that or other low price (I see a lot of places with very cheap keys, but I do not know how reliable they are)? Thanks in advance!

Finally. Unfortunately, Firefox works with less and less websites. I used Chrome, and was able to log in, and eventually found my key and was also able to activate Windows 11.

Thank you all for your efforts to help me. Warms my heart!!!

Here, this may help. Take your time... there's no need to rush. :-)

How to Redeem Your Digital Product
Step 1 --- Go to your Purchases Tab

  • Log in to your account and click your name to navigate to the Purchases Tab
  • Can't find your account? Try the email address and password you used at checkout
  • Checked out as a Guest and unable to Log in? Locate your Order Confirmation Email and click "Redeem Your Purchase" --- or create an account using the same email address

Step 2 --- Find your product
Locate the digital product you want to redeem in your Purchases list.

Step 3 --- Open the redemption instructions
Click "Product Details" to expand the full redemption steps for your specific product.

Step 4 --- Claim your code
Click the "Claim My Code" button when you're ready to proceed.

⚠️ Important: Once you click "Claim My Code," your license code has been revealed and the item is no longer eligible for a refund or return.

When you have the product key, use Option Two, here...

When activated you should see this...

Ghot, maybe my success message came too late -- sorry about that. . I got the sign in URL from the AI help. I could see no place on the home page for where to sign in. So, you need to know the sign in URL to sign in, but how do you know it. I have come a cross such websites a few times, and it is a pain. But, all's well that ends well :-)

I'm glad you got it worked out.
At the top of this thread on the right side you should see a GREEN "Mark this as Solved" or similar.

It will add a green check mark in front of your topic title.
That will let others know that you found the solution. :-)

Last year a BIOS upgrade broke my activation (highly unusual).
Anyway... I found it a lot easier to just grab a new key from Stack Social. ^^

Note: The BIOS upgrade, upgraded the AMD fTPM in my CPU.
MS thought I upgraded the CPU itself, which is what broke the activation.

MS is getting really sloppy these past few years.

I have thought, for quite a long time, that MS has lost control of its OS. A lot of old stuff haning on, new people coming in, not knowing what was done before (because, in my view, documentation of changes are less that good, so now, they are slowly but surely being overtake by Linux. Or so I hope
:-)

I will use Ubuntu on my old computer, and if that works out well, I may say goodbye to Windows altogether.
