Solved Can we install 23H2 instead of 24H2 on brand new DIY computer?

I don't know about elsewhere, but here in Greece SSDs over 2TB are very expensive and not considered for the main disk of a system. So we would usually buy a 500GB or 1TB SSD which can be formatted as MBR. Besides the methods to bypass compatibility check are not limited to MBR disks, they can even be used with Windows 11 compliant systems with UEFI, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0. At least here in Greece we have 5+ years more before using a 2TB+ SSD as the main disk. By then we might have even replaced our today 15+ year old computers.

8.1 introduced the "CompareExchange128" requirement. It wasn't present in 8.0. (It means little to me, but I recall the issue.) I believe that any CPU that supported Win7 X64 would also take 8.0 X64.

I had an Athlon 64 X2 that didn't qualify for 8.1. I probably handed it down with 7 X64.

Is the CPU 64-bit and not first generation AMD 64? You can bypass compatibility check and install Windows 11 up to 23H2. Does the CPU also supports SSE4.2 (first generation Intel Core-i3 or higher)? You can bypass compatibility check and install all Windows 11 versions, including 24H2. That's the important thing to remember.

Regarding Vuescan, this is not compatible with all scanners, so first download the trial and check before buying the full program. Also it has its own interface which might or might not support all your scanner features. I would try the official manufacturer drivers first and leave Vuescan and the like as a last resort. Remember that almost any Vista 64-bit driver or higher also works in newer versions including Windows 11. Always run the setup with right-click Run as Administrator to avoid any issues due to access rights. If everything else fails, I would consider Vuescan.

If it's a response to me, that PC is long gone. It has probably been long retired by the person I handed it down to.

I don't know about hacks to install 8.1 X64, 10 X64, or 11 through 23H2. It definitely has no SSE 4.2. It was released 20 years ago. Contemporary with Pentium 4.

Hey, guys. Can anyone address this issue for the OP?

I can assure all that the ISO is fine and I still use it if I reinstall Windows 11.
I recall mention of this in the forum but can’t for the life of me find where.
The GitHub page is too much of a headspin for my little brain. There’s too much text on that page, and that is an issue for me.

Rufus: latest version (4.7p).
Device: Kingston, 64 GB, NTFS.
Device properties: Standard Windows Installation, GPT partition scheme, UEFI (non CSM) target system.
I clicked to enable runtime UEFI media validation. (A mistake maybe?)
Format options: file system-NTFS, cluster size-default.
I checked the advanced options for 'quick format', 'create extended label and icon files' and 'check device for bad blocks'. Then did the customization choices. (There were no messages about any kind of bad blocks.)

The USB booted the new computer right away. But then we got 3 warning messages on the screen. I'm not sure I fully understood what happened, but it seemed like maybe (?) it was because of me clicking to enable runtime UEFI media validation? Because the warnings talked about md5 checksum stuff and referred to an AMI NTFS bug, telling us to read about it here: GitHub - pbatard/AmiNtfsBug: AMI UEFI NTFS driver bug test application

Seems like this driver bug creates vulnerabilities for persistent malware to get through the secure boot and settle in the UEFI, though it's only considered low risk of that happening. (Not sure what their definition of 'low risk' would be.) For us, though, we need to minimize risk as much as possible because we'll have to be doing sensitive work stuff on it as well as banking, government/tax, and healthcare stuff. So I need to either find out how to fix the vulnerability or else try to do it with the 2nd (newer) ISO [en-gb] from you, hoping that the download interruptions didn't cause corruption somehow. (I started to try to do that, but got the same notification from Rufus about a UEFI bootloader being revoked, which makes me think we'll also get the same warning messages on the new computer when trying to boot/install there with the USB.)

When I tried reading about the AMI driver bug situation at the github link, as well as googling a bit and trying to search the forum here, I couldn't find hardly any info at all. What little there was felt like very confusing Greek to us and I couldn't find a simple layman's explanation about how to deal with the situation. We saw down near the bottom of that github page that it said, "using the UEFI NTFS driver from Releases · pbatard/ntfs-3g (unload the AMI NTFS driver and load the ntfs-3g one) does make the issue disappear." But I don't know how a person would unload or load these drivers in this situation. Not sure if they drivers are located in UEFI, or in Rufus, or in the Rufus-prepped USB. Don't suppose you have any tips for how to handle the buggy driver issue? or any links that might not have come up in my searches that could explain what to do, step by step?

I thought that this was addressed. Allegedly since RUFUS 4.5:

Update UEFI:NTFS to latest (now always uses the ntfs-3g driver, rather than the buggy AMI NTFS one)
Increase buffer size when copying ISO files, in an attempt to minimize the AMI NTFS UEFI driver bug

Thanks @antspants for posting about it in the thread here. I was so tired last night, I didn't think to do that. ... I guess I should really make a separate thread for it, since it's a bit different than the original question was. That way if anyone else experiences the same thing, they might more easily find the conversation about it...

To answer the OP question, yes you can install 23H2 anytime, or even older versions of Windows 11/10 if you have the ISO to start Setup from there. Thankfully I have kept both the US English and Greek ISOs of 23H2 because they are no longer available from Microsoft. Obviously is easier to find US English version than other languages, for example see here:

PS: If you want to upgrade or do an in-place upgrade/repair, the language of the current version and the ISO must match. This means you cannot use the US English ISO if you have another language (UK English is considered different language to US English). However, you can use it to clean install Windows 11 US English and then add a language pack to switch to the desired language.

I just suffered from a horrible experience with VueScan and its author. I had not used VueScan for a while, so when I opened it, it presented an update, which I installed, only to find that the program longer worked. I contacted the author, who gave me a later version to install, which also did not work.

That led to a series of my following his instructions on how to test and report the results, which I did and which totally failed to provide me with any actual information. It was only reading the author's latest diatribe which led me to understand why he kept claiming that I was sending him pages and pages of text, What I was sending him was, each time, a reply to his previous reply. I have learned that many software writers want to be able to easily see what had preceded the user's latest reply. Instead of even deleting my reply and not replying to it, he could have told me that he wanted to see only a brand-new summation of my latest test.

i told him, in no uncertain terms, that his attitude and complete failure to assist me meant that he should learn now to use the Internet, and that his attitude led me to delete VueScan and, in less that thirty minutes, download, install, and make a few changes in NAPS2, scan, and save an image. I concluded with a very short curse in Latin.

Willl this happen to others? I certainly hope not.

Probably newer versions of Vuescan don't support your scanner properly if at all. If you kept a copy of the older version you can use it and disable updates.

I tried a version four or so releases earlier than I had installed. That sort of worked, in that it found my Canon printer. However, when I tried to use that, the program locked up and I had to use the Task Manager to close it. I told the author, who as usual ignored what I told him, which is not what I would classify as providing help. That was when I gave up and installed NAPS2, and removed VueScan, as I did not want to try another version and then perhaps yet another,and continue until I happened across one that worked.

As for keeping an older version, given that, until this arose, I had never encountered an updated version that did not work.

A number of years ago, I found eight words that should not be repeated" "There has got to be a better way." It took me seven months to find it, which was (and is) the Crested Butte , Gunnison County, Colorado, Fire Protection District," a tale that is not pertinent and entirely vastly too large and complex to discuss here. In this instance, the `better way' was simply to switch to a software program that works.

Like I said in an older post, products like Vuescan are only meant as a last resort. Only if there are no 64-bit drivers or it is impossible to make them work. If there are at least Vista 64-bit drivers, try installing them as Administrator. They should work. NAPS2 is an alternative to Adobe Acrobat Pro to scan to PDF. If you have the full Adobe Acrobat Pro and proper scanner drivers, load it and go Create PDF -> From scanner. It does a much better job.

My father recently replaced his printer with a new HP model and when I visited the support site to download the drivers I was reminded that some models have separate drivers for the printer part and separate drivers for the scanner. So make sure you have installed them both. Stupid, I know, but many use their printers wirelessly so the scanner drivers are not applicable. Few models can scan via Wi-Fi or LAN. Most require USB connection to use the scanner. So HP and other manufacturers provide the scanner drivers separately to make the printer drivers download smaller.
