Win 7
Hi,

Let me first thank & show my gratitude for all the people that helped me on how to install Win-7 on Dell T-5820 Machine which is Brand New but have been sitting idle for 3 years due to me not being able to install Win-7 on it myself.
Then couple of people here asked me to find a local vendor do it because of complexity of finding right drivers etc.

So I found a shop that has Dell T-7820 workstation ( Same Year release 2017 ) with following configuration & willing to install Win-7 on it. But I need expert advice from you guys whether he will be able to find drivers etc for Graphic cards I am going to use to run 8 Monitors. Here are specs he gave me.

Dell Precision 7820 Tower Workstation

2 x Intel Xeon Gold 6138 Processors

64GB DDR4 Memory

Nvidia Quadro P2000 GPU

New 500Gb SSD

4TB SATA 7.2k RPM HDD

He will ship me this M/C with Win-7 & I will have to install two NVIDIA T-1000 GPUs to run 8 Monitors.

I could not find the drivers for these graphics cards for Win-7. That is first problem I am facing. Anyone knows where can I find these drivers ?

I do have Win-7 SSD with all Updates. Could he install that ?

Would I be able to run office 2016 ?

Would I be able to run Macrium Reflect Free V.8 ?

Would I be able to run Adobe Acrobat Pro V.XI ?

What other problems could I run into ?

He said he will let me operate M/C before he ships. So what should I check ?

I would appreciate all your suggestions before I buy this M/C.

Many Thanks

Hi,

He will ship me this M/C with Win-7 & I will have to install two NVIDIA T-1000 GPUs to run 8 Monitors.

I could not find the drivers for these graphics cards for Win-7. That is first problem I am facing. Anyone knows where can I find these drivers ?
1. It is getting harder to get Win 7 drivers for things like GPU, especially if they are relatively new models e.g. say less than 5-8 years old.

2. Win 7 is longer supported and is a security risk. It is strongly advised you do not use it any more.

3. If you really have to use it, use it in a virtual machine e.g. Hyper-V. I seriously doubt you can use GPU passthrough from you GPU cards

Overall, I highly doubt you will be able to use Win 7 on new pc with those GPUs (unless smebody can tell us differently).

In the end, I think you are out of luck.

edit: it seems you may be able to get drivers, however 3rd party AVs may claim to support Win 7.

They may be able to block viruses BUT they cannot fix inherent OS weakness (software holes) in Win 7 - only MS can do that and they will not of course.
In the end, it is your risk, but you increase risk of hackers getting access to data such as bank logins etc. I would not trust any third party AV accordingly.

This is a perennial discussion and some will advise you it is ok but REMEMBER this - those giving such advice are not taking any risks themselves. What do you think the odds of such persons reimbursing you if all goes pearshaped LOL.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

May I ask your reason for wanting Windows 7? Is it because you want to use older software, its aesthetics?

After reading this and your other thread, I want to throw my 2 cents into the mix.. First of all, I have used nothing but Dell workstations for 25 years. They are indeed the ultimate OEM workhorses. But they require a lot of drivers and the only ones listed on Dell's site for Win7 are bios and a couple of firmware.
Windows 7 will not automatically install any drivers on its own like 10 or 11 does. Each and every driver has to be manually installed,

So I found a shop that has Dell T-7820 workstation ( Same Year release 2017 ) with following configuration & willing to install Win-7 on it.
Anyone can install Windows 7. Making it work as it should is another story. I caution you strongly to question this with them further. They won't find all the necessary drivers because there are no WIndows 7 drivers, Period... Why? Because Dell did not issue Windows 7 drivers like chipset, etc for this machine. It's my thinking that what this repair shop it telling you is they will install WIndows 7 but ship it to you with no drivers of any kind on it and leave the rest up to you.

Then once you get it, it's up to you to find not only machine drivers but GPU driver that will work for WIndows 7....... and you won't find drivers for that GPU either.. IMO you are opening up a can of worms for yourself and spending good money for nothing. You would be smart to install 10 or 11 and run 7 as a VM or use one of the Linux distros.

Hello glasskuter

So Glad to hear from you. I have a lot of respect & candor for you.
You have given great advice & suggestions to my previous posts & for that I am very grateful.

As for why I want to use Windows 7, there are several reasons, some personal to go into but mainly I am working on something that uses old software as well as aesthetics as you mentioned.

Since you have been working on Dell workstations for a long time, I need your help in choosing the very last one that will run Win-7 flawlessly & readily available drivers. I am using Dell T-7500 with Xeon E5645 & 12 GB RAM & running 12 x 24 inch monitors with AMD FirePro 2460 with only 512 MB RAM. It is working but gives problems & might stop anytime.
So please suggest some Dell Models with much better CPU & GPU to run 12 Monitors & Win-7. Of course I will have to buy a refurbished one so please suggest more than one.

Thank You

If you have legacy Win 7 software, install it in a virtual machine such as Hyper-V or virtualbox/vmware.
This is much safer as you can limit apps to a handful and avoid putting apps like banking software, ebay/amazon etc. and it is much harder for hackers to get control of pc (not impossible but certainly much harder).

You will probably be limited to the virtual display in the virtual machine - passing through gpus to a vm is a whole new story and fraught with difficulties even for an expert (others may be able to advise?).

I am not a techi & don't understand VM.
I need a Workstation that is much newer than T-7500 but still runs Win-7 & GPU that will run 12 Monitors.

Thanks

That's a tall order as there are many. If you want to activate Windows 7, you have to have one of the older ones (2012/some in 2013 and prior) that have a Windows 7 license sticker attached. Unless you have a Windows 7 license already or want to run it unlicensed, here are some of the newest ones I found that have a full set of Windows 7 drivers offered.
These came with Windows 10 so have no Windows 7 license but do have drivers.
Precision T3420 (2016)
Precision T3620 (2016)
Precision 5820 (2017)

Full Precision line here Dell Precision - Wikipedia

Then you need to look at your GPU situation. You not only have to use a GPU that has been issued Windows 7 drivers, but you have to have 2 of them along with a cpu that supports on-board graphics with 4 outputs in order to get a total of 12 outputs for 12 monitors. For each of their precisions Dell gives a list of supported discrete cards. The Precisions with Xeon processors do not have onboard graphics so you have to have a machine with a Intel Core cpu..

So you see, there are a number of things you have to consider to be able to accomplish all that you want. When you find one, if you will let me know before you buy, I will pull up its specifications, driver list, and compatible discrete GPU list to check in more detail for you.

There might be dell win7 installation media for that machine. If so it has a slic table so slp activation is easy.
( If it is too recent for a slic table, win7 keys are very cheap )
Dell T-7820 workstation ( Same Year release 2017 )

2017 I expect it does

looks like DEll media for that machine is GDXKK_X8V66A00_W7SP1PRO64_ROW.iso

if you want to use different installation media you can grab the OEM.xrm-ms and slp.cmd from the dell media $OEM$ folder

f you have legacy Win 7 software, install it in a virtual machine
Although I answered this poster as well as I could, I totally agree and said such. To accomplish what he wants would be a difficult undertaking for an experienced user, let alone a novice. Things would have to go 100% as they are supposed to which, with all things considered here, it's doubtful they would. There are just too many extenuating circumstances to consider.

@sean I want to apologize to you. I gave you incorrect information. I looked closer at Dell's site for the Precision 7820. There are Windows 7 drivers. To find them, you select your OS, then you have to go all the way to the bottom of the list past all the Linux distros before you see Windows 7 64 bit

Many Thanks

Quadro Desktop/Quadro Notebook Driver Release 440 R440 U4 (441.66) | Windows 7 64-bit

This driver is both for Quadro P2000 and Quadro T1000.

Recently tested, maximum Microsoft Office supported version is 2016, Maximum Mozilla Firefox is ESR 115, Google Chrome 109 (not very useful), Microsoft Edge 109 for Windows 7 (not very useful), Supermium Browser 132 (clone to Google Chrome 132). You can install Adove Reader XI and the latest DC 2025 version. Most other apps can be installed at latest versions. For anything else, don't hesitate to post.
