Solved Cannot assign default app for .jpg or .jpeg files in Irfanview

How in the world did you FRY the SSD of Windows 11?

I just wish I could get a handle on what the problem is for your .jpg files and your IrfanView installation. Mine (both) work perfectly, I use the button in IV's Edit to open Paint from time to time, and every .jpg I've got opens by default in IrfanView.

If you’re still curious, or having issues with associations (I understand you have a new install of windows so possibly not)

If I ever have an issue with file associations, I use this table to restore defaults then work from there after. Scroll down to the default app table.

I banged my head trying to change file associations for image files to IrfanVew.
Trying every tip I found, and NO, the standard ways does NOT work.
Changes are made but does not take effect.
I almost gave up when I found out that it wasn't me that was mad..
It's Micro$oft !
They have decided that their choice is the only one. Surprised?

But then I found a IT Consultant in Switzerland (, where else..) who is just as stubborn as me.

With this tool you can also take a backup of all your default programs, useful
when re-installing Windows.

Or, just get a copy of Default Programs Editor. Small, powerful, and free.

Same problem.

I solved it by installing Windows Photos.
Next I Reset the App and removed defaults.
Then right-clicked on a JPG and Choose Another App and was able to select IrfanView with Always Open.
Same with PNG files. Probably needed with JPEG too.

I know this is a very old topic but I had the exact same problem as the first responder.

There was no "ALWAYS" option when using the right-click option "Open with" on a freshly migrated Windows 11 from Windows 10 and before that it was Windows 7.

I discovered that a previous Registry customisation was run (probably be me some years ago) it was this reg file w10_ONLY_stop_reset-fileasso.reg.

The fix is in the second Registry file (remove_w10_for_Win11_stop_reset-fileasso.reg), tested just now and it worked.

It was very frustrating..!
