Solved Cannot install recent Windows updates. eg. "2024-04 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5036980)"

Hello, asking for assistance please,

Since performing the update last year from Windows 10 to 11 everything was performing perfect. However, Since February I cannot seem to install this pending update as it constant reads 'Install error - 0x80070002'.
Could it be due to bad OS files? Maybe because my OS was initially Windows 10 and further updates will no longer work on 11?

Below are my OS specs.

I have performed the following:
1. Deleted folder: '$WinREAgent'

2. Ran following scripts:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
rmdir %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution /S /Q
rmdir %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 /S /Q

Just had someone with the same problem earlier today.



Whenever Windows is acting weird... run these commands...

Open a command prompt as Admin, and run... sfc /scannow <----- System File Checker

IF... SFC finds any errors (fixed or not fixed), run this command next... Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

You’ve tried all this, I’d consider trying to reset Windows Update? Download the Bat file and give it a whirl.

Thank you for helping me.

The tutorial "Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade" worked.
However, I had to download the Windows 11 ISO file and use that not the USB type setup as this had 'Keep personal files and apps' greyed out.

Thanks again!

Now that things are working properly.... you should make a full backup, so if there are any future problems you will be able to just restore the backup.
