Cannot remove account from "Accounts used by other apps"

Months ago, I had to use a client account on a mission. It's been over for a while now but regularly I still have to choose between my real professional account and this one when I use Office 365.

I don't have the password for that account, it's been changed since the end of the mission. So any solution to remove this account by logging into in is not a solution.

When I look at the account I can "Manage" it (which requires logging in) and nothing else. The remove button I see on some screenshots is simply not there. I understand I'm logged in with a local administrator account.

Is there any way I can just remove it from my device without having to reinstall windows? Would that even work?

Welcome to Eleven Forum. The Remove option should be in Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts.

However, if you are also signed in with this MS account you will not see that.

A Microsoft account will not have a Remove button available if is is being used to sign in to Windows 11.


If that is the case, then you first need to switch to signing in with a local account.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

I'm really sorry Bree, but I tried all this. I can't sign in to a local account it seems for some reason the button is missing. I tried several fix including this one. But after creating a local account I have no way of using it. Yes, I've restarted my computer.

I'm so frustrated I want to cry. This has no reason to be as difficult as it is. I'm fairly good at following instructions but every single step I'm missing an option or a button and have to find yet another fix that doesn't work.

If I restore my computer to factory settings, would that work? Or would I just waste more time? I realize this is the 'nuclear option' but after hours trying to simply remove an account I'm not using, it's now a personal issue and I'm all for it.

I can't sign in to a local account it seems for some reason the button is missing. I tried several fix including this one. But after creating a local account I have no way of using it.
If you have created a new local account then you should be able to sign in to it just by signing out of your current account, then selcting another account at the sign in screen. If you have created s new local account, and made it an administrator, then you could start using that as your main account.

It's difficult to tell from your descriptions so far what type of account you are signing in with. From the difficulties you are having it's possible you may be signing into a Domain account. If so, then @Brink's tutorial on Ten Forums may help.


A screenshot of your Settings > Accounts > Your info would help identify the type of account you are using. Obviously if an email address is shown you should blank it out before posting. Here's mine as an example, for a local account.

I've just encountered exactly the same thing. I had an account controlled by an Azure AD for my domain.
Go to Manage My Account, select Access Work or School instead of Email and Accounts and you can remove it from there...
