Solved Can't change what closing the lid does

Every time I change close the lid to do nothing it goes back to sleep. I can't change these options. As soon as I leave the screen it goes back. Is there a solution?

I always have to ask this. We have no idea what laptop you have.

Asking because maybe there is bloatware settings in the OEM software overriding this.

Do you have any (guessing here) Dell/HP/Lenovo software that came with the laptop?

That's only for changing the options that are grayed out. I think that @antspants has the right idea of it being a OEM program causing it.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I just checked on my wife's laptop and the Save Changes was grayed out. As soon as I made a settings change the Save Changes became active.

Sorry guys, but the quotes above was the problem and is solved now. Thanks for the other solutions which I automatically figured it may have been the case as well. I'm not normally this negligent, just don't have my glasses on, my screen is far away and I forgot that there was a save button I had to look for and press every time - I actually probably did look for it and just couldn't see it, and assumed it wasn't there or saved automatically, yet it is ironically clearer on the screenshot that I was missing the save button at the bottom every time. Again no idea exactly why that was, just missed it, but thanks. Finally, the first simple idiot proofing troubleshooting hurdle questions actually worked for me for once in my life as opposed to resetting the OS. Yay.

It's easy to miss seeing it, I've done so before. It's so far down at the bottom, especially when full screen on a 3072x1920 display like the one in your screenshots, that you'd only see it if you knew to look for it.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I just took a good look at the screenshot and you're right. That is way down at the bottom. The first time I saw the screenshot I just took a quick glance at it. @ConfusedUser, It's not you. It's so far down at the bottom that it is easy to over look.

I don’t think I run any settings Windows in full screen, which would be why iit’s so far down in the images. Looks like full screen.

@ConfusedUser the list of things I don’t notice, the older I get, could rival the search results for the term “Blind as a bat”
