Updating the Netgear firmware may plug some security holes, but not much else.
I would simplify things before doing any Firmware update, basic testing. Like stopping all Wireless access leaving you with just 3 wired items.
1st seems to be the Netgear router, the 2nd a Synology NAS box and I guess the 3rd the other router connected to the internet.
All you need to update The Netgear manually is the 1st connection.
To update manually just download the file from Netgear, and point the Netgear to that file. Carefully checking it is actually the right one.
What Wireless Access Points you are using for what Devices is for you to sort out rationally.
