Can't reinstall Office 2019

A few years back I had a subscription to MS365 but decided to stop that and buy a perpetual licence for Office 2019, which I installed and used for a number of years. A couple of weeks ago I got a new PC and wanted to install Office 2019 on that - its not an OEM version.

I unistalled it from the old PC and then installed it on the new one. I got the message to Validate the licence but all I get is a message saying my MS365 subscription has expired and I have two options - Renew or No Thanks. I don't need or want a subsctiption but I can't find anyway to validate the licence and get it working.

I uninstalled it and loaded it back on the original machine but now get the same message.

Seems I'm being screwed over by MS but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this supposedly perpetual licence validated.

Thanks

There are stil remains of the old MS 365 on that system. You have to remove that first. Office has the tendency if it sees old remains things will not install or cause problems you have now. Look at this page: It will show you the uninstall troubleshooter. Uninstall Microsoft 365 or Office from a PC - Microsoft Support

MS has a program called "The Microsoft Office Uninstall Support Tool" that removes older Office versions. (except Office 2024) Clicking on "Uninstall" on the above page will start that proces. Once everything is removed you can install Office 2019 and use your license that came with it.

It's also recommended that you clean your registry once at a while with a third-party program. It will search your whole registry for invalid links, keys, references etc. and removes them.

Are you signed in to the new device with the same account you used for 365? Did you use that account to install 2019?

If so either, you need to remove your account from that program (365 or Windows) to stop Microsoft from associating that account with everything else you do (as Microsoft is wont to do, once they get hold of an account for any MS product installed)

Thanks for your replies.

I've checked the old machine and everything to do with the Office 2019 and MS365 has been removed as per the instructions in the first reply.

On the new machine its now asking to activate via the internet but throws up an error with the message show in the attachment.

When installed it has to ask for a license key. After that it will use it to activate it online. Was this successful on the other machine? If it did then that key is already in use. Did you buy Office to be installed on one machine? (with 1 license?) I suspect it is. If I google that error than it give me the following:
Windows Office error 0xC004C060 means your product key is invalid, blocked, or no longer works, often because it's stolen, from an unauthorized source (like a cheap third-party seller), or used on too many PCs. To fix it, try the Activation Troubleshooter, run an Office repair, ensure Office/Windows are updated, or contact the seller/Microsoft Support if you suspect fraud or need a legitimate key for a new device.
So it seems that you are stuck. There is an alternative. Message me.....

Unfortunately, Microsoft/Windows is renowned for, what I call. "messages of last resort" - meaningless popup messages which clearly indicate something has gone wrong but Windows hasn't got a clue what it is/was. In in some case where the massage is meaningful/definitive, it has nothing to do with the cause thus sending the user on a wild troubleshooting goose chase

And I realise this is unfortunately of no help or consolation to you ...

From where did you purchase the Off2019? (And please, specific details .. not just "a reputable (online) seller")

That popup windows relates to MS Outlook - is it the same for Word/Excel/etc?

Thanks for the help. I've tried all of the above and some others I've found but all to no avail. I either get the error message previously posted or the option to renew my 365 subscription.

The orginal was bought from Amazon as a digital download from some unknown vendor. Its worked for years but sadly not transferable it would seem.

There are cheaper perpetual licenses available for 2019, 2021 and even 2024 but I'm now a bit wary of buying any one of these

Hi Smokey Two,

In the event you decide to ever buy a license through an "alternative" route, make sure it is a retail copy and not OEM. A retail copy can be used more than once.

Kind regards,

tecknot

What I have is a retail version.

It seems MS are determined to get everyone onto a subscription.

I've been trying Outlook for Windows (Free) but there is an option to switch back to Classic Outlook. If you click on this it takes you to the MS website where you can download the Classic version. In reality it's Office 2016 and when you fire it up it asks to renew your subscription.

I'm using Thunderbird for now but can't really say I like the experience. I may just have to accept going for a subscription again.

I have 4 copies of these cheap keys, ($29.99), they all work flawlessly.

When I installed 2019 on the old machine it just went through without any problem. I would have assumed it registered it to my account but when I look at the account on line there's nothing there to indicate it has. I've never seen anything like the screens above.

I can find no way to register it.

I wonder if its to do with the fact that 2019 has just gone out of support in the last couple of weeks.

Go to setup.office.com and click on Get started
Been there and done that but it doesn't seem to help. So I uninstalled everything again then followed the link and tried again.

1. It asks for my License code which I entered
2. It identifies Office Pro 2019 and asks me to redeem it, which I do.
3. I then get another page to download Office Pro 2019, which I do and then run the install.

The programs get installed but as previously as soon as you start one it needs to be Activated over the internet and up pops the error messages as shown previously.

Any chance you need to release the key from the old machine?

I suppose its possible but everything I've read seems to indicate just uninstalling is all that's needed.

Is there any other way to release the key?
