Solved Can't Update Brother Printer's Firmware

IPv6 is not universally supported all over the network universe, even though it's been around "officially" for well over a decade. I've found a number of things that don't work well with IPv6.

I've been having similar issues with being unable to update the firmware on my MFC-J5730DW via the front panel, web interface and Brother firmware update tool. Like the OP, the cause always pointed to a network issue. I finally found the problem was due to the printer being set to use IPv6 on my network. Turning this off to use IPv4 (All Settings > Network > WLAN or Wired LAN >TCP/IP then scroll to the bottom IPv6 to off). Once changed and with a printer restart, the firmware updated without issue (I used the front panel). No idea why this was the issue as the printer worked fine using IPv6 locally. Anyway may be something else to check/try.
This is what worked for me.
