As I said in another post last week - I intend to stay on CCleaner 6.39 (free) for as long as it keeps working.

And, after reading some of the horror stories on their forums - a few people claim they even had to reinstall Windows after the problems they had with version 7 I can't help but wonder how many of these 'disasters' could have been avoided by the use of imaging software, even something like the free version of Macrium Reflect 8 which is still available if you know where to look for it.

They could have been 'back up and running' in a matter of minutes instead of hours or even days.

I guess one can keep stressing the importance of backups (OS image and personal files) over and over but it seems that some people will never get the hint regardless of how big a disaster befalls them.

piriform can keep their new ccleaner is like an infestation.
for reg clean up i now use a portable version of wise registry cleaner
for system clean up revo-uninstaller and wintoys
both work well alongside windows own system cleaner.

A clean and completely free option is HiBit Uninstaller.
It's much more than an uninstaller. It comes with cleaning tools, plus many others.

The way I stop Glary Utilities Pro version 5 (free giveaway) from updating to version 6 (subscription) is to block update.dll with my firewall. Besides, I use Privacy Pro.

I also use bleachbit but only on my Linux Mint and Kde Plasma (both on my vm).

I'll probably use Glary Utilities. I tested the portable version and it seems fine. It also has cookie exclusion.

Edit: There's a thread for cleaners in this forum. I haven't read it all.

Version 5 was a giveaway a couple of years ago. It came with a perpetual license. Glary Utilities, Steganos Safe (giveaway version), CCleaner and many other software try very hard to update your versions to the latest ones, all of which are subscription mode.

Just block the update executable as well as the update.dll file with your firewall.

This kind of forced update is equivalent to hacking.

I uninstalled CCleaner 7.0.0 with Revo Uninstaller and installed CCleaner Free 6.39 downloaded from Download CCleaner Free 6.39 from FileHorse.com .

( I have also been using Glary Utilities Free from time immemorial)
