Personalization Change Accent Color in Windows 11

  • Staff
Colors_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to change the accent color used on a variety of surfaces for your account in Windows 11.

You can personalize the color or accent color for window title bars and borders, the Start button, or the taskbar in Windows 11.

You can change the default Windows mode and app mode for colors to Dark, Light, or Custom.

The Dark mode has a darker set of colors that are designed to work well in a low-lit environment. This option is for the Start menu, taskbar, and notification center.

The Light mode setting has a lighter color scheme designed to work well during daylight hours. If you choose this option, you’ll be able to show an accent color for window title bars and borders. The Light mode doesn't personalize the color of the Start menu, taskbar, and notification center (that option is only available for Dark and Custom modes).

The Custom mode gives you more options somewhere in between Light and Dark. You can choose an accent color or have Windows select one (the accent color will provide a contrast with or match your wallpaper and Windows color). This option is for the Start menu, taskbar, and notification center. You can also show an accent color for window title bars and borders. You can play around with the colors and modes to see which ones work best for you.

References:

Starting with Windows 11 build 22610, Microsoft has updated the Processes page in Task Manager so that the colors used in the heatmap are now based on your accent color. Please note in certain cases it will use the default blue accent color to ensure readability.

It is required to activate Windows 11 before you can choose an accent color to personalize your PC.

Accent color settings will be disabled if using a high contrast theme.

Color settings for windows are saved in the keys located below in Registry Editor (regedit) for the current user.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Colors

Color settings for the Start menu are saved in the StartColorMenu and AccentColorMenu DWORDs in the key located below in Registry Editor (regedit) for the current user.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Accent

Here's How:

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Personalization on the left side, and click/tap on Colors on the right side. (see screenshot below)

accent_color-1.png

3 Do step 4 (automatic) or step 5 (manual) for how you want to choose an accent color.

4 Let Windows Automatically Select Accent Color

A) Select Automatic in the Accent color drop menu on the right side. (see screenshot below)

This setting is stored in the DWORD value in the registry key below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

AutoColorization DWORD

0 = Manual
1 = Automatic

B) Go to step 6.

accent_color-2.png

5 Manually Select Accent Color

A) Select Manual in the Accent color drop menu on the right side. (see screenshots below)

This setting is stored in the DWORD value in the registry key below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

AutoColorization DWORD

0 = Manual
1 = Automatic

B) Select an accent color you want from Recent colors or Windows colors.

This setting is stored in the AccentColor DWORD value in the registry key below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM

C) If you would like to choose a custom accent color instead, click/tap on the View colors button to the right of Custom colors, select and adjust for a color you want, and click/tap on Done when finished.

D) Go to step 6.

6 You can now close Settings if you like.

That's it,

Best Brink,

With great intrest I brose your forums. Recently installed Windows 11 with a clean install.
The reason for this clean install is because my laptop, although with a 7th gen intel i7 does not support Windows 11.
Everything works fine without any problems. However the change to custom colours in Windows 11 is not correct.
Therefore my reply here. When I put in the custom colour with HEX code #83B81A (Acer corporate colour) it does not show correctly.
The moment you hit Done to save this colour it changes into a more darker colour. No where near the requested colour.
When I put HEX #00A1DE (light blue) it even shows as purple. I have also mentioned this to the official Microsoft website as an Issue but I'am not hopeful for any answer from them. Is this also known to you or more Windows 11 users? And if so, do you have any possible fix?
As extra info it was of no issue in Windows 10.

Hello @BakRest, and welcome to Eleven Forum. :-)

You might test using a RGB value instead. You could use Paint in W11, and select Edit Colors to select a color and get its RGB.

I have done this. HEX #83B81A is RGB: 131,184, 26. And HEX #00A1DE is RGB: 0, 161, 222.
None of this works in Windows 11 Settings.

In Paint yes, and also in Settings. But the moment you hit Done to save is it it goes wrong.

Yup it does not work. This light blue has the following result. See attachments.

Do you have the same results on your Windows 11 computer?
If not, it is an issue I have. If you have the same results, then it might be a Windows 11 issue.

But Microsoft wil never help me because it is installed at a non supported device. So for them, case is closed, I presume.
Grrrrr

I often find the RGB and HEX values not always matching up with the color they are for.

Are you able to manually select the color in accent color settings like below?

As a test, try using a lighter shade of the color you want to see if when it darkens it may match better.

When I try to set it brighter as the requested colour it returns to a pre-set level looks like.
It will not go any brighter. It has nothing to do with the extra note: This colour might be hard to read.
So to me, it has a limitation is some sort of colour intensity, which was not present at Windows 10.
While I do not have a problem in normal day to day use in colouring with this laptop while using Windows 11.

If someone has the same impression at his/her Windows 11 system, I would really like to know.
Either I have to accept it, or have to (as a solution) reinstall Windows 11 with a different download as a last resort to have this fixed.

Looking forward to any answers and input from users.
Thanks in advanced.

Today I did a fresh install with the latest Windows 11 download. And the result is (unfortunately) the same.
I have made the colour Lime Green with the horizontal slider to move it to max. Hit Done to save (and use) this colour and appears in this result?? See attachment.

So still a bug in my opinion but think I have to live with it, too bad. Windows 11 is up until now, not very appealing with this bug and ridiculous large Task Bar. Wil see what any updates in the future brings......

Hi, I face a strange behavior after changing the accent color ( just for Highlighted text as a trial ) from white to red following the a.m. guide. Then I saved a theme who keeps the red color at boot up.
The funny thing is : after screensaver starts and then I log in again, the accent color reverts to white, even the registry keys keeps the modified RGB color.
Also the current theme name returns to show "custom" and not the name of the chosen theme.
But... after a reboot the accent color change back to red until the screensaver will start again...
I know, it's not a big issue, BTW I can't get a stable theme. Here below an example :

Hello, :)

This is currently a bug.

I often have to go back to accent colors, select a different color, and select my color again to refresh it to show.

Thanks for ur quick reply :thumbsup:I will stop to retry changing other keys, useless....
So, it's one of the "many bugs" MS didn't care, I remember Win10 had the same issue too. Similar to the one changing Recycle bin icons, well known, without the ",0" after icon name. Too simple items to be solved by them with the new OS... anyway... 🤷‍♂️
Ciao !

Just installed Windows 11 about a week ago.

Everything is running really smoothly. However, every time my computer wakes up from sleep or even when the display turns off and I have to sign back into windows, the accent color keeps changing to this ugly green color regardless of what I set it to and nothing I change in the settings has helped this, and it's pretty annoying.

Has anyone else heard of this issue or have any idea what a solution could be to this problem?

22H2, any way to keep the accent colour highlight active, no matter if the window is selected or not?
With dark theme active, it is impossible for me to discern which window is which when multiple are open.
