Change description of edition/s in Windows 11 iso displayed in setup during clean installation.


Hello everyone.
Special thanks to @garlin and @hsehestedt .
1. Download CorrectVersion batch file from following link Download attachment Extract this zip file.
Open CorrectVersion in notepad by right clicking on Edit in Notepad and then add pause at the end of page. Save and exit.

2. Download WIM Tools from link https://github.com/hsehestedt/WIM-Tools/archive/refs/tags/v24.3.3.273.zip Extract this zip file.
Also download wimlib from link https://wimlib.net/downloads/wimlib-1.14.4-windows-x86_64-bin.zip. Extract zip folder. Open wiminfo script by right clicking on it to click Edit in Notepad and then add pause at the end of page. Save and exit. Download Windows 11 iso having install.esd OR install.wim from Microsoft official website.

3 Make new folder in C: drive, give any name say OS BUILD. Copy CorrectVersion.bat and wiminfo to this folder. Mount downloaded Windows 11 iso created by Media creation tool by choosing iso option. Say the virtual drive is N.It will have install.esd in sources folder.

4. Keep internet ON. Run cmd as administrator. Press Enter after each command.

Note:- Four files are simultaneously downloaded namely wimlib- imagex , libwim-15.dll , offreg.dll and offlinereg-win32 in folder OS BUILD.

6. This is once forever. Now turn internet OFF. CorrectVersion now also works when you turn off internet as the necessary files are already downloaded.

7. Create two folders namely PROJECT and OUTPUT in C: drive. The folder names are to be replaced by user's choice.

8. Install windows kits ADK and PE add on in Windows 11 OS in pc. Run WIM Tools as administrator. Type 9 to convert install.esd to install.wim in Windows 11 iso created by media creation tool by choosing iso option. Name this newly created iso as Wiindows11 ESD2WIM. This step is not necessary if sources folder of windows 11 has install.wim

9 Then use option 4 to modify Wiindows11 ESD2WIM to bypass system requirements to install on unsupported hardware in pc, named as Bypass Windows 11 and saved in folder PROJECT. This step is not necessary for supported hardware in pc for windows 11.


10. Now use option 11 to update name and description of any edition in Windows 11 iso created by following steps 8 and 9 .

To proceed, input the fields in the following messages as below:-

Enter the full path to the ISO image file that you want to work with.
Include the file name and extension: "C:\PROJECT\Bypass Windows 11.iso"
{Right click on Bypass Windows 11.iso in C:\PROJECT and select copy as path and paste in the field asking to include file name and extension.}

Note that you can save your updated image to the same location where the original is located.
You can even use the same file name if you want to update that file in its current location.

Enter the destination path without a file name or extension: "C:\OUTPUT"

Enter the name of the ISO image file to create WITHOUT an extension: Modified Windows 11

Enter the volume name to give the ISO image or press ENTER for none (32 characters maximum).

Volume name or ENTER for none:

Press Enter

Otherwise, enter the index number for the edition to be updated and press ENTER.

Follow-up: Garlin, your example did drive home one point for me, and that is that I may need to try implemnting the WIMLIB tools in my program. There are some tasks, like injecting the monthly updates into all 11 editions of a Windows ISO that can take a while (a few hours). I'm betting that WIMLIB will be considerably faster. But that's going to be a big task I think so it will take me a while.

And because I'm nuts and like to do as much as possible with native Microsoft tools I'll probably set a flag so that user can choose either WIMLIB or use the native Microsoft tools - best of both worlds, or at least a fallback in case WIMLIB causes me any grief.

So, once agian, thanks for that.

Yeah, I use WIMLIB for only one thing right now and that is only because I don't know how to do that without WIMLIB. That one thing is changing the image type to Server. From comments in the program:

' This program makes use of "wimlib-imagex.exe" and "libwim-15.dll" to modify the install.wim
' so that the product type is set to "server". Doing this will allow an upgrade install of
' Windows on unsupported hardware. We are embedding those files into this program and we will
' extract them if and when they are needed.

For everything else I use DISM and in one or two cases I use ImageX.

Thank you all for veiwing, reading this thread.
Use of wiminfo script is just to cross verify the image info.
But I believe in WIM TOOLS by @hsehestedt and it is all in one.
Please have a look at dashboard of WIM TOOLS in post #4. There is an option No. 10. The result is stored in text file Image_Info.txt on using this option number 10. Just type Y to answer the prompt so as to save image information in the said text file.

Updating with respect to post #3 and post #4,
The format to change description of edition in Windows iso is:-
wimlib-imagex info install.wim <index> "<new name>" "<new description>"

I have saved Windows 11 iso v24H2 build 26100 1742 , named Win11_24H2_English_x64 and extracted using 7 zip to folder Win11_24H2_English_x64 in root drive G: The file wiminfo is in G:\OS BUILD folder.
The command I am using is wiminfo in cmd prompt after opening cmd as Run as administrator.

I have mentioned only indices 1 and 6 to which changes are made. There are 11 editions in this iso.
Now use option number 7 from WIM TOOLS to make bootable iso from folder Win11_24H2_English_x64.

Please note that script wiminfo can not be applied to mounted iso as it is read only.

Seriously guys -- just kidding -- always amazed though when people have time to do this sort of stuff -- I suppose everybody is a tinkerer at heart -- I used to drive my parents mad when I was a lad mending dirty oily motorcycles messing up their hall etc and noisily revving engines minus exhaust baffles !!

I asked Copilot about the format of wiminfo to change description of any edition/s in Windows 11 iso. Please find image attached herewith.
It directed me to wiminfo and DISM commands.
I am trying my best to use DISM to change description of any edition in iso of Windows.
If you know how to do this , please guide me about the correct syntax of DISM. I am applying the DISM command on mounted iso and extracted iso, but failed. I am applying above changes in indices 1 and 6 of install.wim of Windows 11 iso . But it throws error no 87 saying that command "11" is not recognized as internal commnad.

Do you see the syntax error? Quotes must be in pairs.

The only limitation while using wimlib to change/edit name and description of edition in windows iso is that it has to be applied to extracted folder of windows iso.
Option 11 of WIM TOOLS intellegently handles this without any additional steps. That is why @hsehestedt has given us very important and useful tool.
