Personalization Change Size of Taskbar Icons in Windows 11

  • Staff
taskbar.png

Changing the size of the taskbar icons no longer works starting with Windows 11 build 22621.1343.

If you wanted to make the taskbar icons larger, you can still increase the DPI scaling level to do so. It will also make everything appear larger though.

The taskbar in Windows 11 shows the Start menu, Search, Task View, Widgets, File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Store buttons (icons) aligned to the center by default.

You can change the size of taskbar icons to small, medium (default), or large.

This tutorial will show you how to change the size of taskbar icons to small, medium, or large for your account in Windows 11.

Depending on your DPI and screen resolution settings, using small taskbar icons could cause system tray icons and/or text (clock) on the far right corner of the taskbar to be misaligned.

EXAMPLE: Small, medium, and large taskbar icons

small_taskbar_icons.jpg
medium_taskbar_icons.jpg
large_taskbar_icons.jpg

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (small), step 3 (medium), or step 4 (large) below for what you would like to do.

2 To Change Size of Taskbar Icons to Small

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Change_taskbar_icons_size_to_small_in_Windows_11.bat

(Content of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /V TaskbarSi /T REG_DWORD /D 0 /F

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

3 To Change Size of Taskbar Icons to Medium

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Change_taskbar_icons_size_to_default_medium_in_Windows_11.bat

(Content of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /V TaskbarSi /T REG_DWORD /D 1 /F

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

4 To Change Size of Taskbar Icons to Large

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 5 below.

Change_taskbar_icons_size_to_large_in_Windows_11.bat

(Content of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /V TaskbarSi /T REG_DWORD /D 2 /F

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

5 Save the .bat file to your desktop.

6 Unblock the .bat file.

7 Run the .bat file

8 You will now notice your screen flicker and a command prompt quickly opens and closes as the explorer process is restarted to apply the registry changes.

9 You can now delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I'm having a problem with this. I did the registry change, and then did the command in the zvive directory. It came back with this message:

I rebooted, but the taskbar is still the same size.

Any suggestions?

I'm using WIn 11 22H2 Build 22621.1778. I'm working on a Lenovo Ideacenter 5 desktop.

Hello, :alien:

I'm afraid the method in this tutorial has stopped working in Windows 11 since build 22621.1343.

Thanks, but I want to make the Taskbar, and, more importantly, the taskbar icons and the horizontal spacing between them smaller. They occupy too much real estate.

Of them only ExplorerPatcher is free, the other 2 you will have to pay (a small amount) to use it after a testperiod.
They all have some (slight) disadvantages, please read reviews and opinions before choosing any of them.

Thanks. I was just looking at Winaero that Ghot had recommended, and it said to use ExplorerPatcher. I'll compare the 3 programs.

I tried ExplorerPatcher, but it won't let me keep the Windows 11 Taskbar like it is, and make the icons bigger. I have to choose "Windows 10 taskbar". . ugh!

Question, I now have larger taskbar icons but the notification area is still small font. I also have Start11 from Stardock but I can't find a way in there or in Windows to make that area, including the clock, a larger font.

Has any one figured out how to make the taskbar icons smaller without third party software or changing DPI for the entire system?

I like small Icons. The larger setting makes me feel like I am using Windows 7. I liked that system but I want to move forward. Small is minimal, I like minimal.

Hello, :alien:

I'm afraid the method in this tutorial has stopped working in Windows 11 since build 22621.1343.
I have to wonder if the solution for this would be the 3rd party I told you about concerning the taskbar tweaking app? I still have to get the 2nd installation on a larger drive to take before I will be look into the appearance settings which suggests icon sizing is included for the latest builds. I'll give you the link for a look at it.

I usually don't like using 3rd party UI customization apps since they often tend to break things.

How did you manage that? The above is your first post. What’s the 3rd party?
