Windows Update Change Windows Insider Program Channel in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to change your Windows Insider Program channel to the Canary Channel, Dev Channel, Beta Channel or Release Preview Channel to get Insider preview builds of Windows 11 on your PC.

Flighting is the process of running Windows Insider Preview Builds on your device. When you run these early versions of Windows and give Microsoft feedback, you can help Microsoft shape the future of Windows. Once you've registered for the Windows Insider Program, you can run Insider Preview builds on as many devices as you want, each in the channel of your choice.

References:

Last year, Microsoft shared how they were evolving the Windows Insider Program to have more emphasis on trying out different concepts with their features and services. This 2023 year, Microsoft is continuing that evolution to better support delivering continuous innovation to Windows 11 by rebooting the Dev Channel from the ground up, to become the best place for Insiders to try out new long-lead features and experiences in development. Microsoft is also creating a new Canary Channel, to support preview builds of platform changes, similar to what was previously flighted to the Dev Channel. Microsoft is excited to roll these changes out and give folks more options to preview builds, but it does require a few initial tactical adjustments outlined below. Read on to understand what Insider Channel may be best for you and the action you may need to take to initiate changes.

Now is a good time for Insiders to evaluate their channel selection to make sure it’s right for them. For example:
  • If you are an Insider in the Beta Channel who wants to be closer to the latest new features and experiences, Microsoft recommends you switch to the Dev Channel today.
  • It is important to note that when switching channels, Insiders can’t switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements.
For Insiders who are automatically moved to the Canary Channel but want to be in the Dev Channel instead, they will need to do a clean installation of Windows 11 to make the switch.

Initial build series per channel:
  • Canary Channel: 26000 series.
  • Dev Channel: 26000 series.
  • Beta Channel: 22000 series.
  • Release Preview: Preview of next public released versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Here is how the Insider Channels will look going forward with the updated channel descriptions:

New-Channels.png

  • [NEW!] Canary Channel: Ideal for highly technical users. Preview the latest platform changes early in the development cycle. These builds can be unstable and are released with limited to no documentation.
  • [REBOOTED!] Dev Channel: Ideal for enthusiasts. Access the latest Windows 11 preview builds as we incubate new ideas and develop long lead features. There will be some rough edges and low stability.
  • [Unchanged] Beta Channel: Ideal for early adopters. These Windows 11 builds will be more reliable than builds from our Dev Channel, with updates validated by Microsoft. Your feedback has the greatest impact here.
  • [Unchanged] Release Preview Channel: Ideal if you want to preview fixes and certain key features, plus get optional access to the next version of Windows before it’s generally available to the world. This channel is also recommended for commercial users.
As mentioned last year, Microsoft controls the state of individual features and experiences included in the builds released to Windows Insiders across the channels. Microsoft does this with Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology. This allows Microsoft to roll out features in stages to monitor quality and your feedback in addition to trying out different variations of features (often referred to as “A/B testing”).

With this level of control over individual features and experiences, Microsoft may release a build to the Dev Channel with a feature enabled but intentionally disabled in a build released to the Beta Channel or Canary Channel. Microsoft will enable features in the builds when they are ready to do so. Microsoft will only communicate about features that they are purposefully enabling for Insiders to try out and give feedback on. Microsoft will communicate to Insiders about new features and experiences that get enabled across all the Insider Channels via blog posts on the Windows Insider Blog including the Canary Channel. But as Microsoft mentioned above, they will offer only limited documentation for the Canary Channel.

This requires you have already set to get Windows Insider builds.

Currently, it would take a clean install of Windows 11 to go from the Dev channel to the Beta channel.

Any features in build 22509 would not be in the Beta channel yet.
and if I switch all the features would be lost because they are not in beta yet is this correct?

According to this article on how to switch back, it has worked. But I guess only time will tell. Here are my settings now.
It is now saying that it is queued for unenrollment.

if I did switch back I would stay in beta, I just don't want to lose any new features from 22059, its a good thing that i keep system images from before updating 22059.

So, are you currently on the Dev Channel?
The features won't be lost forever.
I would think that eventually the Beta and Release Preview Channels will get those features.
Some stuff may get dropped if it is really bad.

it now makes more sense to me, all the current dev channel features will released in mid 2022 because looking at winver it states evaluation copy expires 16.09.2022, the beta channel is closer to the public releases, i'm glad that I have system images to able to go backwards or forwards.

Knowing what I now know, I'd stay away from the Dev Channel unless you are planning to do a clean installation of Windows 11 or stay on the Dev permanently.

There is no way of being certain of the procedure that I posted above to switch from the Dev to the Beta Channel actually works until there is an update. But it appears that it does.

that's a good valid point as its probably better to save the dev channel for a vm instead of a real machine

This states it in a round about way and over numerous sentences and paragraphs, but if it was me, I'd be highlighting the fact in one simple sentence in bold and in red that if you choose the Dev Channel, it may not be easy to change it.
If you've installed an Insider Preview build in the Beta Channel or Release Preview Channel, switching between channels is easy. But if you've installed a build in the Dev Channel, because it's not tied to a specific release, it will depend on your current build and the current flighting build in the channel you want to switch to, as to what steps you will need to perform.

Occasionally it may become possible to switch a device from the Dev Channel to another channel. To determine which process is needed to switch from the Dev Channel, you first need to find your current build number and compare it to the current build number in the channel you wish to switch to.

If your current build number is equal to, or lower than the build number in the channel you want to move to:

  1. Select the desired channel, either Beta Channel (Recommended), or Release Preview Channel.
  2. The next time you receive an update, it will be for your new channel.
It may take some time before updates are available in the new channel you selected.

If your current build number is higher than the build number in the channel you want to move to:

  1. Do a clean installation of Windows 11.
  2. Once you've reinstalled Windows, set up your device again, making sure you select the channel you'd like to move to.

This states it in a round about way and over numerous sentences and paragraphs, but if it was me, I'd be highlighting the fact in one simple sentence in bold and in red that if you choose the Dev Channel, it may not be easy to change it.
this also makes sense when you look at the build numbers on Wikipedia

This is a good tutorial but people should remember that Insider versions should not be main OS (even MS strongly advise that).

My strategy is clone Host OS to a virtual hard drive, then create a native boot entry.

Then rejoin whichever Insider version I want.

If I want to change Insider Channel, just repeat above, choosing channel you want.

As your start point is the release versiom, you never have a problem going backwards.
