Choosing the right SSD...

Of course the Nvme drives are faster but as I said, I don't feel the need.

I use an 860 QVO 2.5" drive as my system drive and actually the only drive for everything.... It works just fine.... I could upgrade to NVME but don't really see the need.
It would be interesting to see its health status, which is probably the only significant difference between the QVO and the EVO.

Using 4-bit QLC the QVO has half the manufacturer's specified TBW endurance of an EVO of the same capacity, as the EVO uses 3-bit TLC. I have a 500GB 860 EVO that gets heavy use, so far I've written over 16TB to it out of its specified 300TBW. Doing so has reduced its Wear Leveling Count and its Health to 97%. If it had been a QVO rather than an EVO the same amount of writes would have meant the health dropping by twice as much.

Still years of life left, even if it had been a QVO. But an EVO should outlive a QVO of the same capacity.

Thanks. I see you have written nearly 7TB in nearly 7000 hours use. You are obviously gentler on your SSD than I am, with my 16TB written in less than half that time. It's writes that wear out an SSD, reading has no effect on life expectancy.

Your health has dropped 2%, while mine dropped 3%. I think with my much higher TB written that confirms a QVO will wear out faster than an EVO, but at the rate you are using yours it obviously has many years left in it.

I've had it and been using it since March of 2019. Two percent in almost 3 years. I'd say it will last longer than me .

Calculating wear rates from our 2 drives shows the QVO with about 62% of the life expectancy of the EVO. Significant difference but also significantly more than half.

I paid $107 for the drive almost 3 years ago when prices were higher for the larger capacity drives. If I remember right, the EVO was like $180 or so at that time. Maybe even more.

BTW games don't benefit greatly on NVMe drives over SATA SSD drives. And games in general don't greatly benefit from being on SSD drives. You get better load and transition times, but it's not like frame rates massively increase because a game is on an SSD/NVMe drive.
Yeah, I keep games on SSD for better load times. I don't like sitting around waiting to get into a game. Obviously once I'm in, there isbno difference. I've moved games off my nvme and onto sata SSD as its more cost effective and nearly same loading performance.

The first drive is my (2018) Samsung 970 Pro NVMe OS drive. The second drive (SATA) is the oldest (2017) in my system. The first drive has been written to many times via OS installs/reinstalls. The second (game drive) only gets game installs.

Yep, why I also didn't put mine on an NVMe as it would be a waste. And a 2TB 970 Pro was far more expensive than a 2TB 850 EVO

I've had it and been using it since March of 2019. Two percent in almost 3 years. I'd say it will last longer than me
LOL, I suspect mine will too.

You seem to do far less writing than I do, your main use seems to involve reads rather than writes. In that case endurance is not a high priority and the QVO is a cost-effective choice. I hammer mine with multiple VMs that get wiped, re-written, defragmented and compacted on a regular basis. I suspect I could easily destroy an unsuspecting QVO if I put my mind to it. :devilish:

With that in mind, you may enjoy reading this....

The qvo does poorly on the test bench, but it might not be noticeable irl depending on what you are doing. This mx300 is quite old and also doesnt score highly on those tests, but it is working fine as far as I can tell.

The mx300 525gb allegedly has 160tbw lifespan so I dont know why crystaldisk shows only 1% used for 5995gb, which would indicate something like 500-600tbw.
HDSentinel says the same. Which is odd, unless Crucial are massively understating it.

I have never done anything with VM's. My writing only comes from installing new things, a few downloads, and updates for Windows and games. I read that article. It was interesting.

For the Windows Server 2016 Essentials (WSE2016) server backups I have used several Samsung SSD's.
3- 2TB T5 External, 2- 2TB T7 External & 3- 4TB EVO 860 Internal SSDs in MiniPro USB 3.1 (exterior) enclosures.
Of them all the 4TB EVOs are the fastest @ 412.7 MB/sec (full BU after new firmware).
The T5 & T7 are close to the same speeds @ 365+ & 376+ MB/sec.
All BUs are of around 1+ TB of data.
The WSE2016 has all Samsung SSDs for 'C' & data drives.

MiniPro @ Amazon

Edit: I generally do update BUs now since it's usually faster than full BUs though the SSD speeds is considerably slower since not just writing data.

Unused reserved nand blocks might look like that because I have a large chunk of OP.
I would keep a close watch on that Crucial 525GB SSD. You have 7 reallocated sectors showing.
