OS
W11 and W10 and Linux Mint
Good afternoon,
My Samsung SSD suddenly died and I had to buy a new one.
I tried to install W11 Family . The files get copied ok, get prepared on but Install quits just after.
I get a message "The files could not get prepared, please restart Install".
I tried again, same problem.
I tried to install W10, exactly the same.

The motherboard (MSI) shows no hardware issues.
The SSD is new, I partitioned it with 530 GB for W11.

What is your advice and what happens ?

Thanks a lot !

I have never heard of W11 Family edition if you have not used the Windows 11 media creation tool to create yourself a new bootable Windows 11 USB flash drive.

can you check the drive with a live Linux distro and make sure that
1. the drive is recognised
2. the drive is formatted

then re-try the Windows install.
best of luck, Steve ..

Welcome to the forum.
There is no such thing as Windows 11 Family.
Sounds like your install media is bad.Using another computer You can create Windows installation media in several ways. Create Windows 11 Bootable USB Installation Media

Windows should be clean installed on unallocated space so that all the necessary partitions will be created.. Clean Install Windows 11

Thanks for the advice i will check the media surely.
The w10 install went wrong also, so maybe it is either both w11 and w10 medias, or none of them...
So I will make new install medias and see what happens.
Keep you posted
Regards.

Well, here is the status:
* the media seems to be good, it is recognized and it contains all the W11 files ...
* I tried to download a new ISO image and create a bootable usb key, using my back up PC which is a very old W7 in 32 bits.
The 1st solution to create a bootable USB key, went wrong, the Windows tool reports an error and quits.
I suppose it is only for 64 bits computers and not for 32bits fossils !
The 2nd solution, using Rufus, does not work also: Rufus just does not start. And I did choose a Rufus version for 32 bits old PCs.
I am now trying to create such a key via my Linux system and it seems to go right but it will probably create a Linux bootable usb so no good !
What can I do ?
Thanks a lot !

This might be a stretch but you problem could also be caused by the USB flash drive you are using. I for one have definitely experienced a lot of issues with getting some cheaper quality thumb drives to work. Sometimes I have to prepare them multiple times with Rufus only of them to work on less than 50% of the PC's I manage. If you have another spare drive maybe you can try that?

The exact error message I get is:
" Windows could not prepare the computer to start in the next installation step. To install Windows, start again the Installation program".
Of course this happens exactly in the same way the next time I try to install.
What puzzles me is that both my bootable W10 and W11 usb keys give the same error messages.
Expecting some trouble because W11 Asks for recent ones so I will start with W10.

Something is wrong if Rufus won't start on your Win7-32 bit computer.
Windows 11 is 64-bit only.
The latest Rufus is available in 32-bit. It's the 3rd one down on the list.
Index of /downloads
I asked Google "can rufus create a 64-bit flash drive on a 32-bit computer"
Answer: Yes, you can use Rufus to create a 64-bit bootable flash drive on a 32-bit computer; the key is to download the correct 64-bit ISO image for the operating system you want to install and then use Rufus to write that image to your USB drive, regardless of your computer's architecture.
The Win11 install can be downloaded using Rufus.

I suggest you build the USB Win 11 24h2 installation drive using MCT

On BIOS:
Set Disk mode to AHCI, not RAID
Select OS mode = UEFI
Disable fast boot and secure boot (you can turn it on after installation)

Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.

As you have a UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT
Detach any other drives (SATA or Power cable) from the MB.

Don't connect to the internet during installation.
During POST, press F12(?) to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name).
Select USB UEFI (Name) to install as UEFI-GPT.
Go to install and delete ALL partitions on the main drive till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.

If you want to use a local account What is "oobe\bypassnro"

I ordered some not-cheap ones and will try again.

Hi all,
I tried to install linux on the M2 drive on the motherboard, full success.
So the MB is good.
I just sent back the ssd and ordered a new one from "a safer" origin. plus a HDD from Toshiba as a backup.and created a bootable media from the msoft site and it was deemed valid.
I think I will install W11 and W10 on the M2 as a next step.

What is the installation error message?

Have you created bootable Windows 11 USB flash drive using Windows 11 media creation tool?

Have you tried other USB ports?

Yes, I did try other usb ports.
The bootable usb key was indeed made with the W creation tool.
Now, I read one interesting remark: I have been using a usb key relying on the system to format it as needed and I think it is FAT32. So I will try again preformatting in NTFS.
The target disk should be UEFI or GPT or other ? I can't understand properly the differences between those !
Thanks again !

An outdated BIOS can cause compatibility and security issues between the operating system and hardware.

An incorrectly configured BIOS cannot start your computer due to a failed BIOS update, virus infection, or other file corruption.

Unplug Unnecessary Hardware Devices.

If you have enabled UEFI firmware mode from BIOS the disk should be GPT disk.

You will get the error message "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI system, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks" if the disk MBR disk.

Now, I read one interesting remark: I have been using a usb key relying on the system to format it as needed and I think it is FAT32. So I will try again preformatting in NTFS.
The target disk should be UEFI or GPT or other ? I can't understand properly the differences between those !
Thanks again !
Win 11 is designed to be installed as UEFI -GPT and not as Legacy - MBR
MCT creates a Win 11 USB installation drive formatted as Fat32. It must be Fat32 to boot as UEFI to install as UEFI -GPT.
If you format it as NTFS it will only boot as Legacy and you will only be able to install as Legacy - MBR

Please read and follow my instructions on post #11 above.
