Clevo/Sager Control Center 3.0 v6.042 has broken a few days ago and breaks again even after workaround.

As the title claims, Control Center broke a few days ago. To clarify The Control Center icon stopped appearing during the aforementioned period of time and my backlit keyboard settings, which are specifically set for it to be off don't appear to work anymore.

Selecting the FN hotkeys and OSD application brings it up again, but the icon itself seems inert and doesn't bring up the Overlay/UI, making it pretty much worthless. However, a set of suggestion's from a reddit post seems to fix the problem, here they are respectively;

"For anyone still having problems with Control Center, this is what fixed it for me.
Go to device manager in Windows settings and uninstall "ACPI Bridge". Click the delete driver checkbox. Restart your computer and everything should be back to normal."

"Thank you so much, i had 2 driver, "APCI Bridge" and "APCI Bridge 1" and had to unistall both and then restart. Thank you again"

I uninstalled the ACPI Bridge and ACPI Bridge 1 drivers from System devices and the problem resolved itself, but enabling Windows Update causes the updated(?) versions of those drivers to install again (Insyde - system 1.0.0.8 and Clevo - System - 6.0.91.1) which breaks the control center once again compared to the older ones that get installed after removing the ACPI Bridge drivers and restarting my device (Insyde - system 1.0.0.7 and Clevo - System - 1.0.40.0)

Are there any solutions for this?

You would need to pause windows update, do what you did before to fix it, disable "include drivers with widows update" using option 2 in the tutorial, then un-pause updates.

Is there anyway to do this without editing my registry? I'm a greenhand at this type of thing and I'm more than likely to fumble the entire process and end up breaking more things before fixing them if I attempt this.

I also tried option 1 to access the gpedit application because that seemed more simple to do, but the file itself doesn't seem to exist on my device.

YOU don't have to edit anything. Brink has done it for you. Option 2 step 3 download the regedit file, and apply it.

I know that, but I'm trying to "avoid" making any changes to my registry at all if I can help it. Hence my misgivings, sorry if I somehow didn't make that clear in the first place.

FYI For many, allowing WU to update drivers and bios updates has caused a lot of pain as WU sometimes installs old outdated drivers. If one wants to be proactive, he will manage his own drivers either manually or using whatever update app the manufacturer installs for that purpose.

And for bios updates, I don't want windows update anywhere near them..

I'm not really sure what the tone of this comment entails or even the necessity of it was. But if I haven't made it already clear this point, I'm just an average user who doesn't even have a bare minimum in understanding the technical details of my own device, thus my particular and insistent line of questioning.

"WU sometimes installs old outdated drivers" and "whatever update app the manufacturer installs for that purpose." So, is this the crux of my problem specifically or is this speculation on my behalf? Yes, I install and use the OEM drivers for my particular model, no, I'm unaware of any app that my devices manufacturer may have proffered for that specific purpose.

"And for bios updates, I don't want windows update anywhere near them" Okay, so which is the BIOS update here. the Insyde driver or the Clevo one, or both. Again, if you're expecting me to know better, expect otherwise.

No tone intended. Just a fact of the way things are.
You stated your problem, I gave the only solution known to work reliably in Home to stop WU from updating your Control Center. It's entirely your choice to use the solution or not to keep your Control Center working. I should also have added the suggestion to contact Asus to see if they have a better workaround..

In later versions of windows, there is no method in the user interface to allow or prevent Windows from doing some things. Certain actions will be performed by Windows whether we like it or not....driver updating is one of them. If one has Pro, one as somewhat more control since some things can be controlled using Group Policy, whereas Home has no group policy, no method in the GUI, and has to resort to registry changes. For some things there is not even a policy to configure in group policy, so even PRO users also have to resort to registry changes to accomplish his needs at times.

So in your particular case, like I said "good luck" with accomplishing keeping WU from updating drivers without intervening with editing the registry.

There was an older method you can try called the WU Show/hide tool but I found it to be oflittle use in Windows 11. In fact it is no longer on MS servers and available only from third party sites so know that mileage may vary.

Note: I just tried to download the tool from multiple reputable third party sites using 24h2 and windows blocked it every time.

You could also use WAU Manager and use it in Normal mode and everything updated has to be approved by you:

Sometimes text is ment to be delivered exactly how it’s written. You would need good luck to accomplish many things in here without adjusting the registry. The registry is created so as we can freely adjust things, otherwise it would be locked by Microsoft.

There are registry entries you cannot change without using an app to give you higher privileges than Microsoft allows, meaning Microsoft has protected us from some misgivings.

Having said that, always backup a registry key before changing it. If you don’t know how, we can show you.
Also, Brinks tutorials that have registry files to change registry values, also have registry files that will undo the change. So you’re covered.

It's not a fix for the broken Control Center as installed on my machine, but has allowed me to access the configuration for the keyboard backlight under Windows 24H2 (had to also install LEDs Keyboard Setting - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store).
