Solved "Compress to ZIP File" does not work


Could be. Test unhiding "Compressed (zipped) folder" to see if the other will work afterwards.

It works! The problem was hiding this option from "Send to"?!?! :woozy:

Many many thanks @Brink :shawn: … It was very important to me to use this option on Win 11 new context menu (I had to use classic menu to zip a file or folder).

Case closed!

hello I'm news here and I got the same issue.
I did try the ZIP.reg but unfortunately didn't work

I have to click on the file(s) to zip, right click then "show more options" (or Shift + F10) then Send to and then Compressed zipped folder (isntead of Zip File).
It seems there is not any other way to get Windws 11 working fine just by right clicking > compress to zip file

Yes it is. There is a Registry patch that disables the new "Show more" feature of Windows 11 and displays the full list with a simple right click, just like in earlier Windows versions. Search for the relevant thread to find the download link.

I meant "no way to get the Compress FIle working" instead of the compress folder.
About the trick you suggested: good to know it exists ... I will check also for that. Thanks for the hint :-)

On my system it doesn't work and I have not any "not allowed" characters.
When I click on Compress to ZIP file, windows tries to open something and it asks which application I want to use to Open the file (exactly as the opening-thread issue)

Is the File Association for .zip files correctly set? Mine is set for File Explorer but if 7-Zip or other compression program were installed that could be the default.

Right in the past I used 7zip and I uninstalled it.
But as I see I can't indicate FIle Explorer. There is not this option

The place to check is Settings, Apps, Default Apps. You may have add File Explorer for the .zip format.

Have you tried to right-click on the file and then select Send to -> Compressed folder ?

If you have a third party application, you can also right-click on the file and select its name and then Add to archive, such as WinRAR -> Add to archive...

Yes, I told this in my previous comments. That one works fine. But "compress to file" doesn't.

Compress to file probably tries to use an application you have uninstalled but for some reason the context menu item was not removed. One easy fix is to reinstall the respective application and then uninstall it again. Hopefully this time the redundant context menu item will be removed. You can also use a third party Uninstaller to make sure no traces of the application are left.

Seems the choice on the right-click menu changes if one file is chosen or multiple files are chosen or a folder containing files is chosen.
