I'd attack this another way

Install MariaDB (it's FREE) plus the ODBC on any computer you have access to (it runs on Windows / Linux / Macbooks)

Create your checking / banking data base in mariadb. Probably quite simple in your case as nr of variables not large and you won't need a whole slew of indexes / foreign keys.

Input your data when you get it -- these data bases if you design them well enough can have zillions of lines of data over many tables. Data retrieval on these is extremely fast.

If you want data into a spreadsheet afterwards -- simple EXCEL query -->get data-->via ms query #-->select data source (your mariadb tcpip port 3306) select the tables and data you want and run -- simple.

Return each query as a new worksheet in the same workbook or a new workbook --your choice.

e.g test db here - data from mariadb

Table and column selection

Even easier if you install HEDISQL to get the data but most people usually want to keep spreadsheets.

Well, checking the version of Office (Excel) installed on both machines would go a long way. If they are the exact same version, then there is a good possibility that a fix can be found since it happens only on one device.

Conversely, if they are not the same version, then we can try to figure out if there is a way to force the working version to install on the machine where it is not working, and see if that resolves the issue as well.

Yes, he tried, and it won't matter.

My spreadsheet is brand new - literally 14 lines. It's simply all of the parameters I mapped out for each and every VM I made on my machine last month. No tables, no data sources, no diagrams, no functions, no calculations, literally nothing but text data. It's not saved to a folder that synchronizes with OneDrive.

This is what it looks like:

16 lines. 0 calculations. Literally nothing but copy and paste (to avoid typographical issues with VMs when creating them, as I am the typo king) - and it exhibits the exact same behavior as the OP is trying to fix.

As I said, this has been happening to me for months, but I've been running the Officer Insider Beta builds for years, and now that someone else finally has the issue, tracking it down, if the OP is willing to put time into it, may be doable. My one machine doesn't make for a great way to test these little, obscure issues easily lol.

It really is. I always assumed it was a by-product of being on an Insider build, nothing more.

Now that it is out in the wild on stable builds, I feel it needs to be investigated.

The worst part is that I still remember the day it first happened to me, as I was poring over fin data at my company to generate reports for the brass and trying different export models, .CSV and direct to Excel (.XLS/X) export. All of a sudden my day got a lot longer as my copy pasta routines were massively slowed down because of this stupid

Well, I don't care that you already pasted it, I'm gonna sit here and look like you still want to copy, and oh, by the way, also block you from copying anything else, while I'm at it.

That was not a happy week for me lol.

Update: I always was under the impression that both computers had the same version of Office, i just checked and we do not.
my laptop has office 2021 the other one has 2019. i also checked and both are up to date for office and windows.
Does that give us a new way to fix this?

So, it is the 2021 (which I was beta testing earlier on) that results in the issue. Something in the way 2021 works is causing this direct issue.

Now we just have to figure out if there is a way to force a Microsoft 365 (aka Office 365) account install a specific version of Office.

If we can get that, then we can much more easily test and confirm this is an issue, and even potentially submit it as a bug to Microsoft - because something in 2021 is causing that cell to remain locked from the copy process instead of being released once you've pasted - which is counter-intuitive to how it has always worked in the past.

Luckily I have loads of VMs, some of which need to be updated anyway, so if I can find a way to do this, I have a place to easily test.

I'll start looking.

No, The problem is on the 2019 , 2021 has no problem in pasting

Oh, wait. If they say Office 2019 / Office 2021 instead of Microsoft 365, you're probably limited by license to that version. Can't force an update to a different version.

Have you considered rebuilding the worksheet and using an actual checkable checkbox that you simply click on to enable to disable the check mark?

And, you could also enable conditional formatting so that, say, the background of a certain cell in each row is changed to green (for check) or remains red (for unchecked), based upon the whether that checkbox is checked or not.

I realize this is well out of the scope of what should be easy answer, but the fact that I I have it in my Microsoft 365 Office installation (whose version is currently Version 2311 (Build 17005.20000 Click-to-run) and you have it in a direct Office 2019 install but not in an Office 2021 install is perplexing.

You may need to sit down with the options in each install to try to find the difference between the two, to see if there is one (probably obscure) setting that causes this behavior.

I'm more than willing to spend time going through each and every setting, with you, though, though I definitely will have some you don't, because if we can fix it for you, that means I can fix it for me as well.

I thought you meant Update, you meant upgrade? There’d be a cheap license for sale somewhere. I believe this forum sponsors a site that sells them. I forget what it is, @z3r010 could tell us.

What I meant was with Microsoft 365, it should already be on a 2021 equivalent, and if he was not, need to find out why - because I assumed it was also a Microsoft 365 install lol.

But yeah, a cheap upgrade might be the trick - except the OP states it only happens on a single spreadsheet.

For me with M365, it happens in all spreadsheets.

Well, I finally managed to get the checkbox into the spreadsheet. it will not let me high light the collum and just click on fill down. is there a way to have the whole collum filled with checkboxes? if not, it will take a long time to do this. i will upload this file to the desktop and find out if that solves the problem.

That is an easy one, should work even if it is an image.

Click on one checkboxed cell.

Then grab the bottom right corner and drag it down.

Just be sure you're not grabbing the image itself. If you click the little green square at the bottom right, the cursor changes to a plus / cross. If you accidentally grab the image only, you should see little circles at the corners of the image. If that happens, click another cell, or hit [ESC] and try again.
