Solved CPU not compatible with Windows 11

Since I'm the one that started this post and after reading everything that everyone has said, there is no real answer to my question. Everyone is either guessing or stating their opinions, which I appreciate. It looks as though it all depends on MS and the up and coming future. Win 11 is running fine on my out-of-date Intel i5 Core FOR NOW. I have decided to install it on another partition (100 Gb, which is plenty) so as to have them both and switch between the two and have the best of two worlds. If something happens to Win 11, it may, of course, affect the whole PC and wash them both away and I'll just have to break down and buy another PC. In the meantime, as the song says: "I'm having the time of my life."

What could happen, if anything, in the long run to my PC that Microsoft has shut out from their list of CPU's? Is it only a security issue? Is it non-compatible with any programs? Are there any I can't use because of my CPU?
In other words: Why has this particular CPU left out from the list and what is it that it doesn't have that the rest do?

Since none of us work at MS it is all guess work at this stage. My suggestion, FWIW, is to use 10 and wait for MS to make it's mind up on what their future plans for 11 are. 10 will be around for 4 more years( Oct 2025) and it will receive full support.

Running 11 on a non-supported CPU isn't the issue since you can roll back to 10 but to me it would be a bit time consuming to go through all of that. I wish we could provide a solid answer,,,,, but we can't

Everything has to be a personal speculation or a desire of what the specific person would like to see happen. I don't think it is a Microsoft thing per se, as microsoft cannot know what will happen to the computer ecosystem during the lifetime of Windows 11 If there are serious moves to require the changes in the processor's security back in 2017/18 then Microsoft will need to do something to protect those users who's systems do not meet the requirements as stated openly at launch.

What microsoft will or will not do can also be speculation, I doubt it will simply pull the rug out from under the users, (this would be bad for Microsoft as much as the users affected). They will likely repeat the reasons they have already stated and block updates beyond a set date.

It's all speculation but I think the sensible route is the best for all involved

In have a similar situation on an old laptop that does not meet the Win11 hardware requirements. I am using Win11 on it largely because I have become accustomed to the UI. If MS pushes out a Windows Update next week that disables Win11 on it, I will just remove that and go back to using Win10 -- as that will remain good for four more years (at least).

What I think.... and I'm speculating.,. is that MS is keeping an eye out on future ransomware thetas and other security issues. If they increase even after the added features to 11 I suspect they will add more features to 11 to tighten up security and that might be by making use of TPM 2, etc thus requiring a more current and compliant CPU.

One of the reasons for 11 was to address security issues facing the business community and they might have to tighten them even more in the future. The change in features were likely in the pipeline and when 11 came out they were finally implemented. To me the best option is to keep using 10 on non-compliant CPU's and only go to 11 if you think it's necessary.

speculation.. over. 😺

Yes, rounded window corners will definitely help with security...the malware will fall off the edge easier and thus not infect the OS further. :zany:

I still think that Microsoft's initial comment about advice from US, UK and I forget which other country security agencies, may have been more of a push by said agencies to clean up the security issues where possible.

As I stated above, I'm running them both on Dual boot. If something happens to Win 11 on that partition, I'll just format it and adios. Win 10 is still here. If I iso over 10, I've only got 10 days to revert back. This way I've got them both. So far, it's really performing very good and fast. I'm even on Beta channel and updates just fine.

You can change the number of days to Go Back to Windows 10 with the following commands in a command prompt like Windows Terminal (Admin.):

DISM /Online /Get-OSUninstallWindow
command will let you know how many days you have left to go back

DISM /Online /Set-OSUninstallWindow /Value:30
will change the number of days to 30 or you can say 45 or 60.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I might try that instead of dual boot.

Microsoft will not:
Brick your system
I wouldn't be so sure, automatic firmware updates were always considered a bad idea in the past, it seems they are pushing them now. (also default hibernation on is a great way to lose your registry if your machine dies while hibernated)

Don't get me wrong, I do love MS, I wish I could get them to change some settings in their OS.. like maybe a warning when your HD is about to die.. or built in profile transfer tool to migrate easier. Simple things..

Its a risky endeavor to run on an unsupported proc as a rollback at that point is probably gonna not really be a rollback and more of a re-install

Anyone running Win 11 on unsupported CPUs, as I do, should have Windows Update on Pause (for however many weeks you wish) and keep an eye on sites like this one when Updates are released. Should Microsoft release an Update that will cut off older CPUs that information will go across the Internet like a lightning bolt at which time the user must decide what they wish to do. For myself it will be as simple as not allowing the Update to install and then using the Go Back command in Settings.

Edit: I would add that should Microsoft be releasing an Update that will end use on older CPUs, since they released a Registry hack to allow this, they likely would inform the public that a new build being released will bring this use to an end.

I've only got 10 days to revert back.

There is a default 10 day rollback period.
This can be modified up to 60 days.
And it may be able to be modified again during the 60 day period.
It's always best to have backup images.

Anyone here cannot predict for sure when and whether Microsoft will release an update which will use the CPU commands incompatible with processors below official requirements. And the way to circumvent such requirements was almost officially announced (not recommended, but anyway). Definitely it would be a heavy blow on the users who decided to postpone upgrading their PCs because of many reasons, chip shortage and high price of new PCs are among them, especially last processors like Alder Lake (currently it's almost like a PS5).

So I think that such "innovation" will not happen very soon and without any announce; also the CPUs only one step below official minimum, like Kaby Lake, have less chance to suffer. Skylake owners (my case) should look for replacement more quickly. Oh, and don't forget to make a full system backup time to time and keep nearby a bootable flash drive with restoration software, like Macrium or whatever you prefer...
