Apps Create Copilot Desktop Shortcut in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to create a Copilot desktop shortcut for your account in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Microsoft introduced Windows Copilot for Windows 11 back in May 2023 at the Build conference.

Starting with Windows 11 build 23493 (Dev), build 22631.2129 (Beta), and build 25982 (Canary), Microsoft is offering an early look of Windows Copilot to Windows Insiders. This first preview focuses on our integrated UI experience, with additional functionality coming down the road in future previews.

After installing Windows 10 build 19045.3754, Windows Insiders in Release Preview with eligible devices running Windows 10, version 22H2 who are interested in experiencing Copilot in Windows as soon as possible when Microsoft begins rolling it out in the near future, can choose to do so by turning on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available and Check for updates. This will be a phased launch via controlled feature rollout (CFR) over the coming months. Windows 10 Pro edition devices on version 22H2 that are managed by organizations will not be included in the initial rollout of Copilot in Windows. Windows 10 Enterprise and Education edition devices on version 22H2 will also not be included in the initial rollout of Copilot in Windows.

Windows Copilot will use the same Microsoft account (MSA) or Microsoft Entra ID (Azure Active Directory) account used to sign-in to Windows.

Windows Copilot will appear as a side bar docked to the right where it won’t overlap with your desktop content and will run unobstructed alongside your open app windows, allowing you to interact with Windows Copilot anytime you need.

A preview of Copilot in Windows will start rolling out with the next wave of continuous innovation in Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361 on September 26, 2023. Copilot in Windows adds AI to your Windows 11 experience to help you find answers, complete tasks, and be more productive. With Copilot, people can quickly make sense of long articles on the web, craft and polish content, or create stunning images--all directly within the Windows 11 experience.

The Windows Copilot feature is only available if you are signed in to Windows 11 with a Microsoft account or Azure Active Directory (AAD) account.

Copilot in Windows is not available to individuals under 13 years of age or if you are signed in with a local account.


Availability of Copilot in Windows: Copilot in Windows in preview is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders in select global markets. The initial markets for the Copilot in Windows preview include North America, United Kingdom and parts of Asia and South America. It is Microsoft's intention to add additional markets over time.



EXAMPLE: Copilot in Windows 11



Here's How:

1 Right click or press and hold on an empty area on your desktop, and click/tap on New and Shortcut. (see screenshot below)

2 Copy and paste the location below into the location area, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

3 Type Copilot for the name, and click/tap on the Finish button. (see screenshot below)

You can name this shortcut anything you like.

4 Right click or press and hold on the new Copilot shortcut, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)

5 In the Shortcut tab, click/tap on the Change Icon button. (see screenshot below)

6 Perform the following steps to add an icon: (see screenshots below)

You can download a Copilot.ico or Copilot_PRE.ico file in a ZIP file below to use.

After you download the Copilot.zip or Copilot_PRE.ico ffile, unblock the ZIP file, and extract the ICO file to where (ex: Pictures folder) you want to keep it saved at.

  1. Click/tap on the Browse button.
  2. Navigate to and select the ICO file you want to use.
  3. Click/tap on Open.
  4. Select the icon.
  5. Click/tap on OK.

7 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

8 You can also Pin to Taskbar, Pin to Start, add to Start menu All apps, assign a keyboard shortcut to, or move this shortcut to where you like for easy usage.

It doesn't offer a pin to the taskbar or pin to the start menu options. Why?

The shortcut works.

The shortcut needs to be as target:
%Windir%\explorer.exe "microsoft-edge:///?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar"

You need to drop the shortcut in :
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
Restart Explorer.

Doesn't show up on restart Explorer. It only offers to pin it to Microsoft Edge!

If you like, there's already a Copilot icon on the taskbar that you can add and remove.

If you meant from the tutorial, then double check to make sure the location path in step 2 is correct for the shortcut.

The Microsoft Copilot button doesn't appear by default in on my unsupported PC. The Microsoft Copilot website app can be pinned to the taskbar.

The built in Copilot doesn't have a taskbar icon to launch it even though its turned on in taskbar settings!

Its the only shortcut in the folder that doesn't offer a pin/unpin option. All the rest have it and if someone can figure out why the pin/unpin option is missing, that would help!

The Copilot shortcut doesn't offer one and restart Explorer has no effect on its absence.

Your shortcut is wrong.
The shortcut needs to be as target:
%Windir%\explorer.exe "microsoft-edge:///?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar"

Brink needs to change his directions to include the%Windir%\explorer.exe because the Microsoft Edge shortcut he posted can't make the icon show up in the taskbar! It showed up for me and I was able to pin it. You need to change the Explorer icon to the Microsoft Copilot icon but its a trivial issue.

It's because you pinned it when it was already in folder:

Code: 
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

So you end up with (1) and the original.
Had the shortcut been correct the first time around , all that was needed was an explorer restart.

Just delete them both from that folder and start over. Pin it from outside the folder listed above.
Sign-out or explorer restart is still a must as your user hive gets reloaded.

This tutorial will help users for whom the settings Microsoft Copilot preview icon doesn't appear in the taskbar.

Its also an improvement in that you can move it anywhere you want on the taskbar while the default icon remains pinned near the system tray.
