Apps Create Copilot Desktop Shortcut in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to create a Copilot app desktop shortcut for your account in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered digital assistant designed to help you with a range of tasks and activities.

When you sign in to Copilot with your Microsoft account Copilot uses your Microsoft account to provide personalized assistance and access by default to a wide range of features. For example, saving and syncing your Copilot chat history on all devices you sign in to Copilot with the same Microsoft account.

Option One

Create Copilot Desktop Shortcut from Copilot app


The icon for the Copilot desktop shortcut created by this option will look better than the icon from Option Two.


1 Open the Copilot app.

2 Click/tap on the Settings and more (3 dots) button at the top, and click/tap on App settings. (see screenshot below)

This will open the Copilot web app settings in Microsoft Edge.

3 In Microsoft Edge, click/tap on the Create Desktop shortcut link on the "All apps > Copilot" page. (see screenshot below)

4 You can now close the Copilot app and Microsoft Edge if you like.

5 You can also Pin to Taskbar, Pin to Start, assign a keyboard shortcut to, or move this shortcut to where you like for easy usage.




Option Two

Create Copilot Desktop Shortcut from Start Menu


1 Open the Start menu :win:, and click/tap on All apps. (see screenshot below)

2 Drag the Copilot app from All apps to your desktop until you see Link above the icon you are dragging, then drop the Copilot app on the desktop. (see screenshot below)

3 You can also Pin to Taskbar, Pin to Start, assign a keyboard shortcut to, or move this shortcut to where you like for easy usage.

The shortcut needs to be as target:
%Windir%\explorer.exe "microsoft-edge:///?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar"

You need to drop the shortcut in :
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
Restart Explorer.

If you like, there's already a Copilot icon on the taskbar that you can add and remove.

I followed the instruction. When I start it, it opens with Google (my start page). Seems not working for me.

If you meant from the tutorial, then double check to make sure the location path in step 2 is correct for the shortcut.

The Microsoft Copilot button doesn't appear by default in on my unsupported PC. The Microsoft Copilot website app can be pinned to the taskbar.

The built in Copilot doesn't have a taskbar icon to launch it even though its turned on in taskbar settings!

Its the only shortcut in the folder that doesn't offer a pin/unpin option. All the rest have it and if someone can figure out why the pin/unpin option is missing, that would help!

The Copilot shortcut doesn't offer one and restart Explorer has no effect on its absence.

Brink needs to change his directions to include the%Windir%\explorer.exe because the Microsoft Edge shortcut he posted can't make the icon show up in the taskbar! It showed up for me and I was able to pin it. You need to change the Explorer icon to the Microsoft Copilot icon but its a trivial issue.

It's because you pinned it when it was already in folder:

Code: 
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

So you end up with (1) and the original.
Had the shortcut been correct the first time around , all that was needed was an explorer restart.

Just delete them both from that folder and start over. Pin it from outside the folder listed above.
Sign-out or explorer restart is still a must as your user hive gets reloaded.

This tutorial will help users for whom the settings Microsoft Copilot preview icon doesn't appear in the taskbar.

Its also an improvement in that you can move it anywhere you want on the taskbar while the default icon remains pinned near the system tray.
