Solved Creating VM from Macrium image

, my error. I had forgotten that back in September I had used this old Thinkpad to see if I could install Win 11 on it, and having done so I obviously imaged it. So the image I was using to create a new VM was Win 11, not its previous Win 10, and that's why viBoot was creating a GPT machine rather than a MBR machine. I really must apologise for wasting your time.
Ah, that would do it

Not a waste of time, I'm sure others will find this thread helpful.

BTW, if you want to try W11 on older hardware it's quite possible (with some simple workarounds) to install it as a Legacy/MBR install.

Just to wrap this up, once I had selected the right image of my old laptop from which to create a new VM on my new laptop, everything went smoothly and I now have both my new laptop's Win 11 setup and my old laptop's Win 10 setup available in the same session. The old laptop can now be sold/donated as I will not need it again. Unsurprisingly I now have a W10 activation issue to resolve but that doesn't mean I can't use it, just can't personalise it temporarily.

Thanks to all contributors :-)

Yes, a VM is a new machine and requires a digital licence in its own right, it has a unique hardware ID of its own and therefore will not activate from the host machine's digital licence. You will need to provide a key to activate the VM. If you have an old W7, W8/8.1 or W10 key that's no longer being used then you can use that to activate your VM. I have activated a W10 VM with a key from the W7 CoA sticker of a dead PC before now.

If you do activate your VM do NOT just delete the VM when you are done using it. Once it has a digital licence you should preserve that for later use.

This Hyper-V VM of my previous laptop, created with viBoot, works fine providing the USB drive containing the image file is still attached. The folder I created on the internal drive to store the VMs does have 22GB of files and folders but no VMs are shown if I start Hyper-V with the USB drive unplugged. Is this the norm or have I missed a trick somewhere?

Maybe this will help -

Small correction - the VM does show when I open Hyper-V but it doesn't boot without the USB drive being connected.

Viboot requires the image to be available to run. The hyper-v virtual hard drive uses differencing drives.
You can use the edit disk option, select the viboot virtual hard drive and export it as a consolidated virtual hard drive. Once you have done that, you can use the new vhd which is totally standalone, and you no longer need the usb image.

Thank you cereberus - freestanding was what I was expecting and was a bit taken aback not to get. However your post gives me exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you again (y)
