Hi Edwin, when you click on the the taskbar icon per your method, does it create another icon for the open version? For programs that can be pinned by the normal way, if I open them, a little bar appears below them showing there is an open version. If I open a document per your method, it creates a new icon on the taskbar tray and the icon looks different? Would be nice if I could get it to work like the other pinned icons... asking for a lot, right... I guess beggars can't be choosers at this point...

Is there a way to create a request for taskbar customization? Windows 10, 8, 7 ...etc were all so much nicer...

by the way, I found you can't change the icon picture after you rename the file back, but you can change the icon while it is still an .exe

For that you would need to create a custom Toolbar, and, for that you'd need an alternative Explorer shell.

Many people use ExplorerPatcher [or StartAllBack] for this purpose. Why should they change to your utility?

With Stardock Start11 software you can pin any Windows folder to the taskbar and if that folder has subfolders, then the topmost folder pinned to the taskbar becomes a menu.

Also, If you use Fences, I am pretty sure you can add a Fence that you have created to the taskbar. A Fence can contain basically anything you have on your PC that can have a shortcut applied to it.

The file in question needs to stay where it is, or you'll break the path to the implicit shortcut it creates upon pinning.
Change the extension to .exe, pin it...

It will only work for that particular file!
Middle clicking, in my case, will simply open a new blank Word document.
