Defender is no longer a sub-par antivirus app

@CornishRattler With Norton, I check weekly or less I find it has never failed (along with common sense) It's just install and forget for normal AV but I do use the scan on demand a lot as I download tools and mods from some dodgy countries

@The-Hive I used Norton for years and always liked it never had any problems with it ,I just tried WD for a while because of a friend talking about how good it was and I just left it .I still like Norton and if i ever change again it will be Norton

I used to Norton 360 just a year ago but, frankly I was getting tired of the suscription model. So uninstalled Norton. To this day Windows Defender never let me down. I would expect a nicer GUI, but it's OK. Never had viruses with Norton, either with Windows Defender

When Microsoft opened their Atlanta store, I purchased a computer and was setting it up at one of the desks in the back of the store. There were some Microsoft corporate folks milling around during the store opening. One of them stopped by to see how I was doing setting up my new computer and I asked him what his recommendation would be for an antivirus. He said that the best one was already on my computer. I questioned keeping Windows Defender and he said to consider all the people testing out all the computers on display in the store. Every one of them was live to the Internet and every one of them was locked down to Defender. Then he went on to say that at Microsoft Corporate all they used was Microsoft Defender. That was good enough for me!

Since they work together well. I personally do not have a subscription.
If you can not afford Premium, You can at least use the free Browser Guard that blocks the same bad sites as Premium and more in the browser

No, I don't think any country in the world allows the use of pirated applications.
The companies themselves, like Microsoft, Adobe etc, whose apps are most pirated, generally ignore pirates installing on home computers, but they catch corporates and sell them licenses.

Me too. It's all I have used for years. If I run into a problem or am doing some yearly maintenance, I may install malwarebytes to run a scan, but it literally never finds anything...which I guess is a good thing.

WD was poorly named by Ms since the previous WD on W7/W8/W8.1 was a really poor system. MSE essentials on W2K3 server was an infinitely better product but wasn't developed from XP onwards,

The marketing bods at Ms ought to have seen at least one of Lord Sugar's "The Apprentice" programs on Branding !!!! To launch something with the same name as a previous failed and useless piece of software was imbecellic to say the least.

Todays WD on W10 and W11 is perfectly OK -- it's a totally different ballgame. Most domestic users would be better off in learning about current threats which are likely to be scams and identity theft rather than "Classic Hack attacks" and using old last century's solutions and software against C21 issues.

Malwarebytes can do this. You do not need to buy a licence to do this, only if you want it online.

People say daft things like A has 99.8% accuracy but B only has 99.5% accuracy, so B is useless.

99.8% accuracy means for 998 in 1000 viruses, A will work fine (or 2 in 1000 it will not).
99.5% accuracy means for 995 in 1000 viruses, B will work fine (or 5 in 1000 it will not).

You would have to be very unllucky to find the extra 3 in B that might slip through.

In next upgrade those 3 will be patched. All these figures are statistical at time of testing, and update cycle.

Point is these figures are much better than a decade ago, where figures were 90% or less).

So 100% agree - there is little to choose in terms of virus protection these days. Probably the only differentiating factor is how many false positives a package gives, but (personally) I do not really care about that.

Of course, competition is GOOD for Defender, as the worst thing that could happen is if the competition goes out of business and MS become complacent.

I certainly have to laugh at bravado of this one. No shame in his game. Not a surprise he's been banned. Certainly earned it.

Anyway, I only use Microsoft Security (Defender) as it works for me. Nothing else needed.
