Of course any AV no matter what it is or who delivers it is always 100% reactive and therefore by definition vulnerable at times

Back in the days of W7, I was sold a pirated copy of Ultimate. It was fully sealed, had all the holograms and the packaging was first class. It was of USA origin and I thought it had been brought over in somebodies luggage from there, hence the price being about half of the UK price. I had been a member of the W7 forum for some time when Microsoft flagged it as pirated. With help from the forum, I ended up sending the whole package back to Microsoft Ireland and they kindly sent me a replacement. I still have the W7 software, of no use as the pc it was on died in 2020.

I had a client with one of those. The hologram on the disk was a sticker that could be peeled off.

Of course not!

But that wasn't the point. The point was that Defender was what was being used at all the Microsoft stores and that Defender was what was being used at Microsoft Corporate.

I bet if you walked into an Apple store they wouldn’t be using Chrome or Edge instead of Safari.

@cereberus I agree, all choice of what the individual feels happiest with, and a bit of common sense thrown in.
BTW @tinmar49 Norton has an off-line scan, I expect most av's do nowadays. Norton has one on the right click context menu, great for checking a file in a hurry

At the time of my comment, it impressed me that Defender was robust enough to protect Microsoft Stores and robust enough to protect Microsoft Headquarters.

I'm beginning to wish I had never made a comment here on the forum about my early experience with Defender.

Exactly.

Some of these posts on previous batch testing of A/V products are a bit like saying I'd rather have a watch that's broken because it will show twice in 24 hrs 100% accurate time whereas one than gains 2 secs in 24 hrs won't be accurate at all.

As for being allowed to use pirated products -- I have a feeling that in most of what one might call "Civilised democratic countries" the copyright convention forbids the use of such products even if at individual level it's hard to police.

I'm sure if you invented something you would want your intellectual property rights protected whether by patent law or whatever,

Doesn't mean that all of the the MS employees were using it at home. If you went to a Ford dealer, would you expect to see a new Chevy in their showroom? The point I'm making is is that most, if not all security programs have their pluses and minuses. One should use what they feel safe using. It's a never-ending job for security programs to keep up with all the new threats that are being released.

Using only one makes one feel safe. Using both makes one feel safer. When it comes to security, I try to practice safe computing habits, keeping my security programs up to date, and doing an occasional free Eset online security check. I see my backups as extra security for any kind of file corruption. :)

I used Outpost for many years until they ceased making it available to non-corporate users a few years back. Been using Windows Defender ever since, and never had a problem.
