The user interface of Windows Defender is very awkward to use, and it hasn't improved at all in Windows 11.
DefenderUI significantly improves usability and unlocks many hidden security features.

I don't use Windows Defender, but I reckon that some of you might find this very handy.

I've got an issue on one Win 10 laptop with Defender. It doesn't show Protection History and I've tried everything, including a upgrade/repair install, to fix it with no success. Will try this to see if it will show the history. Thanks for the info.

I've got that issue on one Win 11 laptop, in fact it turns out it was already present in the Win 10 system that I had upgraded to Win 11. Fixing it is another matter - so far I've failed to find anyone who has successfully done so. Fortunately I still had a system image of the W10 machine from three months ago before the issue appeared. It's a common complaint with no obvious solution, apparently....

Yes, DefenderUI will show you the history, but only in the sense that it can display the relevant Event Log entries from the Microsoft-Windows-Windows Defender/Operational section of the Event Viewer. These events are still recorded, even if Windows Security itself says 'no recent actions' - it is a failure of Defender to read from the logs, not that the logs don't exist. As a workaround I have created a Custom View for the Event Viewer to display detections. I've exported it and attached it in a .zip file, if you'd like to import the Custom View into your Event Viewer.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Many thanks for that @Bree. Most helpful. Funny that Microsoft knows about this problem, admittedly that rarely occurs, and they've known about it for some time, yet do nothing about it.

Whichever backup I have now has this problem as I realised too late.

I could put a free AV on it but that just covers up the problem. Maybe when 10 upgrades to 11 officially it might fix it :lmao::lmao:

Will have a play tomorrow.

I doubt that the upgrade from 10 to 11 will fix it, my upgrade from W10 to W11 22000.51 obviously didn't (though at the time I hadn't realised I had the issue). I think the issue appeared after a BSoD on the W10 machine that 'donated' its installed W10 OS to my System One below, which I subsequently upgraded to W11. As this was a trial run for migrating the OS, I'll be wiping it and repeating the migration of my (now) correctly working W10 in time for the official release to upgrade it to W11.

@Stigg , had a play with it and looks promising. Shows event history as @Bree mentioned. Good that you can turn off starting with Windows. Tried this:

but no go.

One bug I found out the hard way is the UI won't open again from the start list - only from the short cut. :censored: I'm keeping it on this machine and will watch how they develop it.

@Bree, Custom View for Defender is very handy. Thanks again to both of you.

Well well.. got Protection history working but don't really know how. After playing with the above decided to check the Store for updates before shutting down. First thing to show was a McAfee app! Never showed up before. Checking the start list it wasn't showing and because it wasn't showing I didn't search for it. I'd previously searched for Kaspersky and Bitdefender for legacy files as I'd previously tested them. No idea where it was lurking.
So I uninstalled it via Geek.exe. Rebooted then started a' winget upgrade --all' and as it was running Defender started the usual pop-ups so clicked on one and presto, protection history was showing.

I'm assuming McAfee to be the issue and a puzzle as to where I got it (no doubt a hidden bundle) and why was it hidden? Must have been on my system a long time!

After such a long time trying to find ways to fix it I'm happy it's now working as it should.

Just an update.
Went back to an earlier image where Defender was broken, no protection history, and ran the repair with DefenderUI. I don't think it did anything. Anyway used Everything to search for McAfee. I seem to remember that I uninstalled it without running it when the laptop was new. Defender worked okay for quite a while then the history just broke. This is what I cleared as well as a lot of registry entries.

Screenshot_6.png

After clearing the list and a lot in the registry I rebooted.
Checking that Controlled Folder Access was on I ran Belarc and the Protection History is working. Thanks ASUS for putting this rubbish on your machines :ffs:

Now to go forward to the latest image. Nice to have a Tardis :boom:

I am not techy but using the above I was able to see the results of the Defender scan
---

>It has been awhile but above is strange to me and I wrote it. Using event viewer and adding operational after Defender I could locate the scan but not the results..
Sorry for the confusion and do not now what I was thinking. I cannot find entries to controlled folder access after following every tutorial that exists.
Perhaps using the program that was devised on this thread it can be done but as I said I'm not techy enough to do so.
Does anyone know how to remove the entries to Controlled Folder Access or finding results of an offline scan?

@Bree

Got the same issue again! Checked for McAfee etc nothing. Ran that DefenderUI and again nothing. So, checked the registry on a working system and found one entry missing. Created it and now protection history works. Wondering if you could check it out on your non history Defender machine if you have time? Many thanks. I'll post the registry images for reference.

I've got an issue on one Win 10 laptop with Defender. It doesn't show Protection History and I've tried everything, including a upgrade/repair install, to fix it with no success. Will try this to see if it will show the history. Thanks for the info.
FWIW with windows 10 and 11 you can see the results in protection history only if there is a detection. As simple as it sounds if there is no malware detection nothing appears. If there is then you will see the results in protection history.

Yes, but it wasn't working as before I'd tested it many times.

Sorry, no can do. I fixed that machine by going back to an earlier system image from before the fault appeared and it hasn't reappeared since.

Good to know you found a registry fix though.

That's a pity because I'd also ran the DefenderUI repair once, but it didn't make a difference. Thank you any way.

Well the only thing I can add is that the registry key you created doesn't seem to be a requirement for protection history to show, one of my machines has it missing but has a full history. Creating it though probably triggered some changes that did fix it for you.

That's how it showed on the non-working Win 11 but was showing in Win 10. Dammit that I'd run Defender UI previous to adding the key as not certain now if Defender UI had an effect only after adding the key.

Just an update to this. Went back to 25182.1000. The reg key was missing so I left it as was. Tried the usual repair/reset of Windows Security and no help.
I downloaded DefenderUI and installed. Turned off Tamper Protection and ran the DefenderUI's 'Clear and repair Protection History' and it auto reboots.

I have a folder with old Toshiba drivers that Defender picks up as PUPs so ran a scan and lo and behold Protection History started working. Previously hadn't turned off TP until faffing about later on, so that's when the repair worked before, and I didn't realise it. My bad there.

There's no previous history in the service folder so whatever caused this issue had cleared it. It was working fine the previous Dev flight before this one.

After the fix had to turn on Tamper Protection and Controlled Folder access.

My apologies @Bree for the registry red herring as I was trying too many things at the same time to fix it. I'm not well organised as you can guess :woozy:
