Seems both are working with fastboot turned off for the linux system and on auto instead of minimal for the windows system. Let's hope it stays that way. I don't want to get new systems.

@Kojack I don't blame you. DELL has been an extremely reliable brand for me, and many others I know. I've serviced & maintained over a dozen DELL Windows 11 Pro machines with zero problems other than a drive that went south (it was an old drive).

Yes, I love my current laptop and desktop. It's just disheartening when you go to turn it on and get into this loop of 3 power cycles, then to repair, then rinse and repeat. I know all the hardware is fine from countless tests. I hope this fixes the issues with both. The machine with linux on it was hardly used. Most times it was just sitting on my wife's desk. There is no way any hardware could be damaged enough to throw video error codes in it.

We will try them both for a few weeks and see how it goes. Right now I am about 15 to 20 power cycles in with my laptop and all is good. I turn it off after every use.

It's still happening but at a much lower rate now. Like one in every ten starts it hangs on boot with black screen. Cycle the power and it fires up again.

I did a clean install once I got the system back up and running from the major "crash" about 3 weeks ago. As for reporting BSOD, there are none. It hangs on the black screen or goes into repair mode right away after 3 boot attempts.

The V2 script is a log collector.
When it was updated from the DM log collector it created the ability to troubleshoot non-BSOD problems.

Please report what happens in safe mode with regards to: "hangs on the black screen or goes into repair mode"

Report what happens in clean boot with regards to: "hangs on the black screen or goes into repair mode"

When available post a V2 share link into the newest post.

This sounds interesting... I'd be curious if this was YOUR issue as well . . .

Is your power supply the 360 watt or 500 watt?
I hope this helps you. (y) ;-)

Hi

I have the XPS 8940 with GTX3060 32GB ram and i7

My pc passes every diagnostic test with flying colors. But the one thing diagnostics do not test is the power supply.

The power supply in this unit does not have adequate power to keep this machine running with the GTX3060.

How do I know this is the problem? I removed the GTX3060 and replaced with my trusty GeForce GT1030 with 2gb RAM and have not had the problem since.

Is my machine slower? No. Do I notice any difference? I'm not a gamer so no I do not.

The machine shipped with a power supply that cannot adequately power the components. I'd check available power supplies for this unit and replace it with the highest wattage power supply they have available. If you bought the PC without configuring the machine manually you definitely have the base 360 Watt power supply.

They have a 500 watt power supply available for this XPS 8940 which should do the trick.

How can Dell not know this? Would anyone build a powerhouse pc with an I7 and a gaming graphics card and put a 360 watt power supply in it? I think not.

For the record I am an IT Consultant with 30 years experience with Dell Servers, PC's and laptops.

Been there done that. It is the power supply. ⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️

My 8940 is the only reliable dell I own. The issue is with my notebook devices.

All of the Dell laptops I've serviced have been VERY reliable.
If there is a problem like yours, my checklist would be:

fans/paste/cooling (cpu & gpu) - I did fix someone with a Dell gpu cooling issue -- once fixed ROCK SOLID performance/reliability
Use better thermal paste

drivers
ram

I have Noctua NT-H2 paste on my cpu/gpu currently. I replace it regularly since I keep dust clear in my systems. It is some silly driver or Bios issue. It's been much better since turning off fastboot.

I closed the lid on my laptop for dinner. After we sat back down we watched some tv and I never touched the thing until this morning. It was cool to the touch like it's shut off, but I opened the lid and I was where I left off. First time ever that it slept the correct way. Usually when I do that and forget about it on the sofa, I come back to a scorching hot system. Hopfully it;s running correctly for good now.

Could it be my battery causing these issues? it's completely gouched right now. When I unplug my laptop it does not stay running at all. My charging indicator on the side of my laptop is also flashing.

EDIT: Just went in to bios to see if I could get any information on my battery and low and behold the answer to my problems was in there under system logs. It's the ram slots in the MoBo. Not the ram itself, but the slot on the board. Only way to fix is a new motherboard.

Guess I will see if I can get a new one and a new battery and get er back up and running reliably.

So another update on my laptop saga. The battery swelled and caused the touchpad not to respond. I am buying a new battery today so I hope within a week I will have it. I was at the point where I was going to toss it. I also looked in the bios before the battery swelled and found event logger. I kept getting the same event error, so I searched it and found that it was a RAM socket failure. I am hoping that I can clean the sockets and it will work correctly. I pulled the drive, and ram out of it as I was thinking it was done, but I am going to try a new battery and see how that goes. For the other Dell 3179, That’s something else. It takes multiple tries to get started. It says graphics issue, but then it will do a test and say everything is fine, but the beep code says graphics failure. I dunno.

I cleaned the ram slots with compressed air and Rubbing alcohol and it seems to be working much better. My battery was supposed to arrive yesterday, but has not shown up here yet. I am on my 5406 and its working. It seems really slow however, I hope it's just looking for the battery and it's just taking some time. It's much slower than it was previously. But, it's working.

Thinking about getting an eGpu for this system to take on the road with us.
My 2014 Dell laptop just started this black screen on startup issue. I suspect an Intel GPU driver issue. Will experiment reverting to the MS Basic Display Adapter and see what happens.

This has been happening to my systems for a while. I have updated drivers many times. That being said, I have noticed that it happens at a much lower rate if I just open the lid to start my pc. If I had it open and hit the power button to start, it happens much more.
