Me to Friend: "About two weeks ago, you fixed the software on my office computer (the one with the Arc 580 graphics card). I had to recover from a backup, which went fine. However, as before, I now have to power it off using the hard power button to get it to boot. Do you happen to remember how you fixed that?"

Friend to Me: "This error has to do with the reserve partition having too many system fonts installed. The solution is to mount the reserve partition, navigate to the "FONTS" folder and delete all the fonts. You can Google the "step by step" or if you don't feel like dinkin' with it I can take care of it after the holidays."

============

Can anyone provide guidance, or a link, on how I can do this? Hate to give my friend ammo. ;-)

What happens when you click Shutdown option on Start Menu?

Also try shutdown /s /t 0 command from admin Command Prompt and let us know how it went.

Requires me to hold down the Power button afterwards or will not reboot. Same with Restart.

I suggest you disconnect all the disks except the one with Windows on then see how it behaves.

Personally, I think the suggestion about fonts is complete balderdash. And I've no idea what is meant by reserve partition nor how it can have fonts installed on it. Only Windows has fonts installed.

Tony,

I would like to reserve suggesting the solution until various questions have been answered but it is safe to say that one solution will be to make a system image, reinstall Windows then restore just the C:\ drive from that image.

Please, ask away!
1 What are the drives whose labels you have hidden in the graphical part of that Disk mgmt diagram? And what is on them?
2 What are all the other drives listed in the top-left of that Disk mgmt diagram? And what is on them?
3 What is the history of this computer leading up to the initial onset of problems and the renewed problems?
4 Please report what happened when you tried the shutdown command suggested by Freebooter. [What you posted was what you did afterwards not exactly what the computer's response to the command was.]

My intent is to fix without having to reinstall programs.
The procedure I outlined will not involve reinstallation of any applications.
By reinstalling Windows, you will fix the boot problem and by then restoring the C:\ drive [only] from the system image you will restore your OS to its current state including its installed applications.

Question 5 - how did this pan out?
I suggest you disconnect all the disks except the one with Windows on then see how it behaves.

Interesting finding. The problem occurs when my HDD is connected. Take it off and no problems. Strange.
