Of course, it should be working on development builds. And it should be working when we get the release build. Supposedly released on Sept 20th.

When it comes to Windows, just because something should work doesn't mean it will. As an example, I haven't been able to use the Realtek audio drivers on the last few Dev builds.

Dictation tools are so poor. They cannot handle the wide range of accents of English. Even in UK we have many local variations.

Look at the auto subtitles from Teams which is essentially a dictation tool. If you turn it on, it takes you so long to decipher the garbage it produces, that the conversation has moved on by several sentences and you lose track.

Ok with a dictation tool, you can train them a bit, and all is recorded but the amount of errors you have to fix is still significant.

They have a long way to go before they are truly useful which is a pity for disabled people especially.

Voice Typing worked just fine in build 22000.918 until August 31. In fact it worked better in that version than it does in the insider beta version.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. For the first time since I lost Windows Key + H it returned today without me having to buy 365. If it works in otlook.com it willl work in Word and any dialogue box. It works in address bars and any signin now as it did before I lost it. I think enough of us poor folk threatened to abandon ship they had to retract their forced sell. It has been a long, long time with many updates. I have Office Home and Student 2019.

Question - why do we need to be connected to the internet for Voice Typing to work?

I just tried it without internet and got the message "you need to be connected to the internet".

Windows issues the drivers that enable or disable it.

Perhaps it was a decision not to add additional data and programming required for voice dictation to the existing space required for Windows.
