That, plus going to Linux, plus concern about losing keys during CMOS resets.....

Sounds like a good case for using MOSBY. You will still lose keys after a CMOS reset but it's easy to repopulate them once familiar with how to use it.

If you don't revoke it, then you're open to a number of exploits that target the 2011 cert. That's not to say they're not busy working on the 2023 cert, but so far that's not a major issue.

Here's the Google AI perspective. I jumped the gun on my systems and revoked the 2011 cert and I'm booting with the 2023 certificate chain for all four systems.

Significant Secure Boot exploits via the 2011 certificate

Key vulnerabilities include:
  • CVE-2024-7344: Discovered by ESET researchers in January 2025, this flaw uses a UEFI application from real-time system recovery software suites. The application was signed with the trusted 2011 certificate but contained a vulnerability that allowed the execution of untrusted code during system boot. This opened the door for bootkit malware like Bootkitty and BlackLotus.
  • CVE-2025-3052: This memory corruption flaw, discovered by Binarly in June 2025, is a significant bypass of Secure Boot. The vulnerability lies in a legitimate BIOS-flashing utility, designed for rugged tablets, that was signed with the trusted Microsoft UEFI CA 2011 certificate.
    • Exploitation: An attacker with administrative privileges can exploit a weakness in the tool's handling of the IhisiParamBuffer variable. By manipulating this variable, the attacker can overwrite a critical memory location (gSecurity2 flag) to disable Secure Boot entirely. This allows for the installation of persistent bootkit malware that can evade detection by operating system-level antivirus tools.
    • Scope: Because the trusted 2011 certificate is used on nearly all modern PCs that use Secure Boot, this vulnerability affects a huge number of systems.
Mitigation and certificate expiration

Microsoft has taken steps to address these issues, and users should ensure their systems are updated.
  • Vulnerability revocation: Microsoft has added the vulnerable modules to the Secure Boot revocation list (DBX) to prevent their execution.
  • Certificate retirement: These recent exploits highlight why Microsoft is retiring the entire 2011 certificate chain. New 2023 certificates are being rolled out, and the 2011 chain will begin to expire in June 2026. This retirement process aims to improve security by deprecating older, potentially compromised certificates.

The DBX section is certificates that are banned, anything on that list will not be recognized by the Secure Boot process and will be barred from loading.

Yes, I know. But I updated my EFI boot manager to CA 2023 and verified it. So what is it flagging as BANNED? I would have expected it to say the boot manager on disk0 is allowed, not banned.

Well, it clearly says the 2011 cert is banned in the DBX listing, so I don't know what that blank entry is for. With all the scripts floating around to check these variables, I don't know what his particular display is showing.

Now I'm struggling to understand what's meant by banning a boot manager in the first place.

I think it's trying to convey whether or not the system has 2023 signed boot files, 2011 signed boot files... or either one.

My advice is to go back through the thread to find the MOSBY script and use it. It will also find the MOSBY certificate if it's in DB, but mostly it just seems to work understandably. But maybe I'm misunderstanding that too.

I see you are using PowerShell 7 or similar, rather than Windows PowerShell (pwsh.exe rather than powershell.exe). The previously posted scripts have a bug when used with pwsh, as I originally noted in this post. @garlin posted a fix in a later post in response. I tried his fix and it worked.

I've attached the script with the modification below. This works with both PowerShell 7.x and Windows PowerShell. It also has his addition that picks up Mosby certificates if present.
