Solved Discover which device driver is missing?

I Just build this machine. The Device Manager shows Unknown Device with missing drivers. How do I discover which device this might be so I can get and install the missing drivers?

More than likely chipset drivers. Did you install all the drivers from Asus?
Best method- Install and run Armoury Crate. It's on your motherboard support page. It will update your drivers for you.

Another method -Run windows update to see if it will find missing drivers.

Thanks for the response. I ran windows update and it had nothing more to offer. I didn't realize Armory Crate was also a driver utility. I thought it was only for controlling motherboard and case lighting which I don't use. I'll check it out.

After following the video instruction, device ID helped me determine it was ACPI/AMD GPIO drivers. After some internet traveling I found the AMD chipset driver utility, installed those drivers. All looks good now.

As stated, - install chipset drivers, and any other drivers for that board from the board vendor's site.

One of the biggest mistakes builder's make is believing Microsoft has ALL the drivers needed for a motherboard, but this simply isn't true as shown by your Device Manager.

One of my biggest pet peeves since I got into computes is making sure I have a clean Device Manager - no question marks, exclamation marks or yellow triangles. Thus is my Z890 build I did 3 weeks ago. All clean...



For new builds, install the drivers from the board vendor's site. Make sure you choose the right driver set - Windows 10 / Windows 11. If you don't want to get from the site, you can always install the driver gathering suite - for Gigabyte's 890 boards, it's Gigabyte Control Center (GCC)

For other vendors it may be Armory Crates, or some other suite. These suites will read your system and install the appropriate board drivers.

Just a tip:

I cite this frequently simply because it is so handy in many situations.

Once you have you system working properly, it might be a good idea to make a backup of all your drivers. It's super easy and this way you can reinstall all your drivers SUPER easily.

Make a backup of your drivers

Open an elevated command prompt and run these two commands:

md c:\Driver_Backup
pnputil /export-driver * c:\Driver_Backup

It is literally that simple. No just save that folder to a safe location.

Restore all drivers

If you ever reinstall Windows from scratch or something happens where you need to get your drivers reinstalled, just open Device manager, right click your computer name at the top of the device tree and select Add drivers. Point to the folder with your saved drivers and make sure to check the option to include subdirectories.

It's just that simple!

Also, if you ever have just one or two drivers go missing, you can select that item in device manager and tell it to search for a driver, pointing to the folder where you saved your drivers.

Bottom line is that saving your drivers by exporting them like this can make life much easier!
