I recently updated from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro.
I just did a in-place upgrade and there were no reported issues.
My Windows 11 version is Version 10.0.26100 Build 26100
I was able to run the DISM Ckeanup command with no issues in Windows 10 but as the title says I now get error 1726.
The RPC Service is running and set to automatic.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ RpcSs and Start is set to 2.
I have attached the CBS.log and the dism.log.
The SFC scan reports no errors and the DISM tool reports no store corruption is detected.
I have run the DISM repair command
My firewall reports nothing is blocked.

After extensive searching on the net I've not really found anything more helpful other than to re-install Windows 11.
I have a number of applications installed and would rather not have to re-install which is why I upgraded from Windows 10

Any other ideas?
Thanks.

My Windows 11 version is Version 10.0.26100 Build 26100

That isn’t the full build.

Please type “winver” in to search or run and show the sesult
It should be Build 26100.xxxx

There has been a bug in previous builds but was fixed not long ago I believe. And I’m not sure if the bug was related to this.

I can’t read the logs I’m on my iPhone.

    …still on a horse.
If you do a 'repair install using Windows Update', you won't lose any programs or personal files.

It can take an hour or so and requires very little user intervention. When complete, you can use Disk Clean-up to remove the Windows.old folder, which contains your previous installation or you can leave it and Windows will delete it after thirty days.

I've used this a few times and it is very effective.

Until others reply, I asked ChatGPT.

DISM returning error 1726"The remote procedure call failed" — usually indicates a problem with the RPC service, system file corruption, or incomplete servicing stack functionality.

Here’s how to resolve it:

✅ 1.

Press Win + R, type services.msc, and check the following services:

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)Should be running and set to Automatic
  • DCOM Server Process LauncherShould be running and Automatic
  • RPC Endpoint MapperShould be running and Automatic

If any of these are stopped or disabled, start them and set them to Automatic.

I got error 1726 repeatedly several months ago, while updating to 24H2 with in-place upgrades.

I did these tests to upgrade a non-supported old Lenovo desktop from Windows 10 to 11. I used UFDs created with Rufus, initially with all the customization options enabled.

The problem was finally solved when I did NOT include the options “Remove requirements for an online Microsoft account” and "Set regional options to the same values as this user´s" in the Rufus customization. Additionally, I selected he option "Don´t look for updates now".

I followed your suggestion and used 'repair install using Windows Update'.
Solved the problem and cleaned up a couple of other minor issues.
Thanks!

Now that your system is squeaky clean, it is the perfect time to do an image backup. Restoring from an image backup is much quicker than problem solving or reinstalling Windows.

I use Clonezilla every two weeks at a minium. Backups have saved me both personally and professionally. Big believer in offsite and onsite backups. If you've ever lost data like from a graduate degree program and been able to recover you'll be forever grateful.

I hope you are using it to create system images and not just to back up data?

Please mark this thread as solved. And indeed, the problems that an in-place repair install are many, this apparently being one of them. The Start > Settings > Recovery > Reinstall now feature in recent Windows 11 version is -- IMHO anyway -- worth its weight in gold!

I keep my OS on one drive (C) and my data on another (D).
I create an image of the C drive on my D drive and on three external SSDs with Clonezilla.
I use something called Beyond Compare to synch my D drive to three external SSDs.
I apply encryption to all key files and folders using 7Zip before backups on the D drive and Clonezilla supports encryption for the OS on the C drive.
I keep an external SSD with me at all times (fully encrypted) with both the OS and all my data for use if I am not around my computer e.g., traveling.
A little over the top but I worked for 40+ years for large companies (retailers) and that's the kind of rigor we used to insure we could restart critical systems in the event of a major problem.
You needed your warehouse system to be restartable!
And, I lost some work as a graduate student on an old Apple, and barely recovered.
Lesson learned.
