Good Morning! This is my first post on this forum, hopefully I manage to give you all necessary information.

A few weeks ago my Laptop started getting random bluescreens; it was annoying but happened only every other day so I didn't take any action really. After a windows update the problem got better, but wasn't resolved. Then, yesterday, I noticed that I can't open windows defender; even Microsoft word didn't open.

After several failed attempts to repair windows, I decided to do a complete factory reset. But that didn't work either (it started but then said it was undoing all changes).

Long story short: I ran the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command; after that failed, I tried it with a windows image (install.wim) as source. As far as I can tell, a lot of stuff was fixed, but I still got a repair failure for some parts; the CBS log says "CSI Payload Corrupt" / "Repair failed: Missing replacement payload.:

I now have two questions:
  1. Some things have been fixed apparently; are the remaining repair failures a problem? Of course, ideally I would like to have none.
  2. Microsoft word seems to work again; windows Defender still won't open. Can this be connected to those repair failures, or are those unrelated issues?

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it! If I forgot anything, let me know so I can do better in the future.

Best,

Markus

have you tried burning the Windows ISO using Rufus to a USB stick.
when the Rufus window opens tick all the boxes that you want ticked
and then set Rufus to GPT and UEFI before you start the burn.

link to the Rufus how-to ..

then try installing Windows or browse to the setup.exe within the USB
and doble click that to start an in-place upgrade of Windows

choose which ever you prefer and works, upgrade first then clean install if the upgrade fails.
best of luck, Steve ..

these are present on my PC - but to fix yours you will need the 26100.1455 Media

But do you have any newer versions installed? if so then i would not worry about it...

Thanks, Steve!

I didn't try burning the ISO to a USB yet; I assumed the same problems would arise. I'll try this on the weekend and report back!

Quick update: I tried installing windows via the setup.exe on the USB; after some 30 minutes the installation failed:

Error 0x8007042B - 0x2000D - Installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA Operation

I'll try a clean install once I have more time.

Update on this issue:

  1. I finally managed to clean install Win11 after several failed attempts. In the end, I used an old PC to create a bootable USB. Also, it seems like some of the standard options that Rufus used caused a problem for me. In the end, I didn't tick any boxes in the last dialogue. I don't know if this or the old Laptop solved the problem
  2. Unfortunately, I am back where I started. In particular, Windows Update is causing problems. Failing during download or install. Right now I am, once again, attempting to download a repair version through windows update.

Last update on this thread:

After the manual repair using windows updated failed again, I managed to repair windows 11 using the inbuilt windows support tool (which did not work prior to the clean install).

Now it seems as if everything's up to date and working.

I would check the health of your drive(s) to be certain.

Download DiskGenius and or Crystal Disk Info both in my signature.
View the SMART Info for all the drives on your computer separately. This will give you the overall health of your drive.
If it is any less then GOOD, it needs to be replaced.
