Display Adapter in VMware?

I decided to run the Windows 11 Dev builds in a VMware VM on my Desktop running Windows 11 Beta. The VM is using the Microsoft Basic Display Driver. I downloaded the driver from NVIDA for my GTX 1050 Ti card. The driver will not install. Is it possible to install the driver or am I stuck with the basic driver. If I can what would I have to do?

Vmware is a type 2 hypervisor which sits on top of windows where the drivers are all emulated in effect.

Even a type 1 Hypervisor (Hyper-V) cannot do direct GPU passthrough on Windows 10 - that only comes with Windows server versions, and even then it is not simple.

I wouldn't care except for the fact that Windows doesn't follow my color theme. the Taskbar is white instead of blue and the Start menu is grey.

I just finished installing VMware Tools. Now my Video Adapters is the VMware SVGA 3D. I'll see if I can get my color theme working.

The colors still doesn't work In Setting the Show accent color on Start and Taskbar is still greyed out.

I don't know what could be going on but you might try toggling Transparency effects to see if that makes a difference. I would also check the guest display settings to make sure that 3D graphics acceleration is on.

Not strictly speaking 100% true.

KVM/QEMU can do GPU passthru and I think HYPER-V can do it as well .

Enabling Physical GPUs in Hyper-V

In this article we will look at how to add GPU acceleration to a virtual machine.

Setting it up though is not intuitive and you also need to set iommu in the BIOS (or whatever the parameter is on your MOBO). Usually this fact is omitted in VM setup which is why some efforts at passthru come to grief.

Note it does take a bit of work and research but if you have the hardware always well worth the effort. -- on the HOST system and in the VM use the physical GPU in the VM's configuration file.

You need 2 GPU's -- one for the HOST and another for the GUEST. VMWare is a type 2 hypervisor so unlikely to allow passthru of real hardware -- it runs essentially on the top of the HOST OS and runs "paravirtualised hardware" which works for a lot of people using single user workstations but isn't the best where the VM needs to be accessed by many users e.g as a file server / database query engine etc and where performance is paramount.

Type 1 HYPERVISORS like KVM/QEMU and HYPER-V actually load the VM "directly" with minimal HOST overhead which is why given a proper setup they will run rings around VMWare / VBOX (type 2 HYPERVISOERS) for performance -- even when using "paravirtualised hardware"

I checked and 3D graphics on turned on. I was hoping to be able to change the color of the Taskbar and the Start Menu.

'Show accent color on Start and Taskbar' is always greyed out if you have the light Taskbar and Start menu.

To make them dark you need to select the default Windows mode as 'Dark'.

Then it will not be greyed out...

As I said HyperV will allow GT Passthrough but not if host is Windows 10. You have to use server versions afaik.

I stand corrected -- OK !!

I think though with some great deal of difficulty it has been done "Unofficially" in the same way as getting HYPER-V to run on WINDOWS HOME - but I accept the point.

That said for people who want to try it - WINDOWS SERVER 2022 is available as a trial for 180 days. It might have improved recently --the last time I tried it - it was so limited - including no customisation because it wanted an activation key -- even for a trial and there was no mechanism for getting one unless you had an expensive business account.

I might have a go with this later on == the server versions of Windows are very easy to install and run very efficiently. If Ms says "general availbility to evaluate / try for 180 days" then presumably they shouldn't stop people from using the features they most need.

I was messing around with the host Windows 11 Beta and tried a few themes and didn't like the changes. When I tried to go back it was just like you said. The show accent color on Start and Taskbar was grayed out. I did a search and found that it a problem with the light theme setting. Their fix was the same as what you posted. The next time I use the VM I'll give it a try.

I got curious and decided to run my Windows 11 VM to see if I could get the colors to show on Start and the Taskbar. Using the correct setting in custom worked like a charm.
