The Samsung NVMe PM9C1a 1024GB SSD does not use a Phison NAND controller. Instead, it uses Samsung's in-house developed Piccolo (S4LY022) 6-Core 4 Channel Controller. The PM9C1a utilizes a controller built using Samsung's 5-nanometer process and seventh-generation V-NAND technology. 🤔

Yes. Only because some of my games require it fo fight cheating at deeper levels. Otherwise I am okay without it. I won't be able to play the game if it is disabled.

Yeah, Mods should remove those posts. :cautious:
I liked the joke in post 46 :-) I saw the old Movie from 1979 (Escape from Alcatraz) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079116 just two days ago.. and i sooo could see the scene with Clint Eastwood when he taught the other convict a lesson and made him eat the soap as he wanted to get friendly.

So i say let the joke in post 46 stay, it was fun :-)

The comment didn't bother me. I just figured anyone that would think of that probably had some first hand experience! 😁🤣

I'm a bit late to the party (as usual). I do use Secure Boot on my Windows laptop - it was set up with it on arrival, and I could see no point in turning it off. The desktop had problems with Secure Boot for a few years when it was first set up, but that was fixed by an update so it was on. Now it is on Linux Mint, I have turned Secure Boot off. Whether it is worth having on is a moot point. Microsoft’s Secure Boot has been broken for a decade and no one noticed until now

John
I think this is called the YellowKey exploit?

But one easy way to block the common way YellowKey exploit is deployed is to disable CSM mode entirely in BIOS, which is needed to boot to a USB key and install the exploit. Then put a password on system BIOS to enter the setup screens which would be needed to enable CSM mode in BIOS. Microsoft's working on a more complete fix which will come in time. At least for now, this does block at least this vector (I don't know if there are others) for getting the exploit into a system pretty well.

Also, remember that secure Boot is only one part of a complete chain of security that must be deployed to have it all make sense. BIOS password, proper BIOS setup (like CSM disabled), Secure Boot enabled, encryption on system AND data drives that ONLY unseals when the TPM says the system has passed a validation, i.e., hasn't been tampered with.

And using a PIN in addition to your logon PIN/password and TPM-sealed key to mount the BitLocker protected volume provides even greater level of protection. Not even Microsoft has access to this and it's needed in addition to a recovery key. Anything alone can be picked to pieces but everything together is pretty hard to break.

YellowKey was a WinRE-based exploit, which doesn't have anything to do with Secure Boot.

Secure Boot did its job, but unpatched WinRE was sloppy about allowing an unrestricted user shell to open with more privileges than it should have.

Microsoft patched YellowKey in the last Patch Tuesday.
That is good to know... but I do understand there to be other secure boot logic flaws, so more fixes are forthcoming. At least I hope so.

Until then, I think the only way to get tin-foil-hat level of security with Win11 is to set up the entire chain from BIOS setup password through to bitlocker with TPM+PIN. It's not really that hard to do, and not very intrusive in daily use either. Although you do need to use GPEdit to enable Bitlocker PIN so that even state sponsored examiners with a stack of court ordered warrants can't access your data without using thumbscrews.

What about waterboarding? I don't believe that has ever been explicitly outlawed in the land of the free.

That is good news :-) (y)
what I'm a bit curious on.. why only win11 and not win10 as both has bitlocker....
The person that found the CVE thought it was to obvious so it could be interpreted as a on purpose backdoor
Have you heard if Microsoft have made any official statement about why only on w11 and not w10?
