Does anyone know if these processors support System Power State S3 (Deep Sleep)?

Tell MS. It was them that I quoted.
So what's your point exactly? Mine is that waking from S3 sleep can be, and very often still is, a much better way to avoid classical issues related to Modern Standby when compared to waking from hibernate. (Even, if we can assume that the latter works flawlessly, which isn't always the case either─as @Wynona correctly pointed out.) The only brand purposely killing S3 in BIOS with some products being Dell (AFAIK). I repeat, this isn't just about the ~7 seconds difference in the time it takes for it to be woken up. Microsoft made a mess. Next, Dell came and saw an opportunity to turn that into a double mess.
Nobody else realised there was an argument going on.
I thought we were all just exchanging our views.
Views? There's nothing to view here except a bunch of old news.
I think S0 Modern standby is a curse but I am quite happy to read that it suits some people.
I suppose if all you do is ride a bicycle, then it doesn't really matter that your car blew up (and blew up twice). Same story about "views" on whether the Windows 11 taskbar and start menu are actual improvements or not. 🤣

Well it's funny to me that there are numerous questions about a laptop overheating with the lid closed in sleep.
Yeah, it's so funny that it's sad. lol

And the most effective initial response to such reports is to get the OP to run
PowerCfg /a
to help find out if they are really S3 Sleeping or merely in a state of S0 Modern standby [ aka S0 Low power idle].

All the best,
since modern backup
since modern standby is not available on this machine, I am reasonably sure it isn't the culprit for for me.

I recently bought an XPS 17 9720. i7 CPU with the rest of the specs maxed out. It overheated "sleeping "on my desk because of S0.

I wasted days with support assuring me they can "enable S3", but all they did was play around with power settings and ask me to run diagnostics or try the old registery hacks.

Eventually I had to return it as it is a must for me to be able to close the lid, put my laptop in a bag, and resume work without the battery depleting and without having 64GB of disk space reserved for hibernation

Got another laptop with S3

My new PC arrived and it does support S3. It's the Lenovo M70q. The bios doesn't have the option to enable Modern Standby which my other Lenovo bios has. S3 is available with a clean install without having to modify the registry. Now if I can only figure out of there is keyboard shortcut combo that will put it sleep. The Lenovo wireless keyboard doesn't have the sleep key like my Dell.

Well, you could set up the power button to send it to Sleep.

Or use AutoHotKey.

All the best,

If a window is active, then press Win + D to show desktop. Next, press Alt + F4. Alternatively, you can go to the WinX menu (press Win + X), followed by U, then S to sleep.
(On my Logitech K800 Wireless Illuminated keyboard I can just press Fn + F8.)

Thanks for the tips. I created a shortcut for Sleep. The shortcut point to rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep. I added a shortcut key combination of CTRL-F12 to the shortcut. This seems to work fine. To get this to work, I had to disable Hibernate (powercfg /H off) I prefer Sleep over logging off. Logging off does not put the system to sleep.

Rick,

I sometimes S3 Sleep & sometimes Hibernate so I cannot use the shortcut that you do.

I have NirSoft NirCmd so I can use a Sleep shortcut that allows me to keep Hibernate enabled.
C:\Tools\NirSoft\NirCmd.exe standby

...Or if you have PsTools you could also specify psshutdown.exe -d -t 0 for sleep, psshutdown.exe -h -t 0 for hibernate.
(Just another way to skin a cat.)

EDIT: Or rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0 for sleep, rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 1,1,0 for hibernate.

EDIT2: I just tried the latter method above, it still puts my laptop in hibernate regardless of the 0,1,0 or 1,1,0 parameter values it seems. D'oh! lol

EDIT3: The Mark Russinovich way does work, though. 👍

OK, I found it now.
Sleep:
Code:

Hibernate:

I think that PS Sleep cmd requires Hibernate to be disabled first.

Denis
When I type powercfg a in a cmd window I get this:
Code:
The following sleep states are available on this system:
    Standby (S3)
    Hibernate
    Hybrid Sleep

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

    Fast Startup
This action is disabled in the current system policy.
So, hibernate is definitely on (but hybrid sleep is off in my currently active power plan, which I have verified by typing powercfg q and looking under the HYBRIDSLEEP alias, just to be completely sure about this), and, after I run the 1st PS oneliner my laptop's power LED slowly blinks (sleep) so I can wake it up within 2 seconds with a mouseclick whereas the 2nd PS oneliner causes it to go completely dark after Windows has saved the hiberfil.sys file and then mouseclick does nothing so when I press the power button it takes multiple more seconds to load from hiberfil.sys like expected. Looking for System | Kernel-Power EventID 42 with Level 4 and Reason 4 in the Windows eventlog also reveals that sleep has TargetState 4 and EffectiveState 4 whereas hibernate has TargetState 5 and EffectiveState 5 so that's it then, for me it works.

I have hibernate enabled and that first ps cmd did nothing for me so I thought hibernation was the explanation.
However, I rebooted a few minutes ago and the ps cmd now send my computer to S3 Sleep as you expected.

Being a PS cmd, it takes a few moments to run but it has the same effect as my NirCmd cmd [which is pretty instant].

All the best,
Denis

Using any of these as a shortcut, does anyone know of an icon resource file in the system32 folder that will have a moon or some other icon that could represent sleep? I didn't find anything in imageres.dll... unless I missed something.

I use one in
%SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll

and I use a nearby one for my Hibernate shortcut [shutdown.exe /h]

Thanks Denis, I didn't see that one in imageres.dll. That'll work.
