The issue is if they are using a USB3 port, [ now USB 3.1 Gen 1]. They are going to be limited by the port speed, [4.8Mb/s], on any recent SSD or other Solid state drive such as M2 based SATA or NVMe

There is also a bit of confusion over terminology, the main one is the Type-C which is not a speed rating but a plug/socket type, you could fit a USB-A to USB-C adaptor to a USB1.2, USB2 or USB3 rated source and it's a basic case of What goes in is what comes out
It's only when a USB-C plug/socket is connected to a USB3.2+ source that you will see the full performance of current Devices

The same applies of course to M2 which is also not a speed rating But in this case a Mounting system which can accommodate SATA or NVMe and potentially other future options. [In another configuration I have used an M2 motherboard connector to connect an Optane Memory module, used as a Buffer for a HDD to speed up access ]

It's 480MB/s, not 4.8Mbs. Also, USB 3.0 is now USB 3.2 Gen 1x1. (USB 3.1 Gen 1 is what it was before someone had deemed it necessary to change it once more, just for the sake of doubling the confusion of course.) This page gives a detailed explanation of USB differences:

USB3 or USB3.1 Gen1 is definitely 4.8Gb/s (not MB/s which I wrote originally) it's generally rounded up to 5Gb/s as it sounds better when selling it. USB3.1 Now USB3,1 Gen2 is double rated at 10Gb/s

USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 is indeed 4.8Gb/s (gigabits per second), or 600MB/s (megabytes per second) data signaling rate over 1 lane using the same 8b/10b encoding that SATA III also uses, so, because the encoding reduces it by 1/6 as has been explained in the link I posted above, it actually boils down to 500 MB/s, or 4Gb/s.

Megabits Per Second (mbps) is the measurement of how fast our download speed is: Check yours here: www.speedtest.net .

The current port colors for USB plug-ins i.e. Flash Drives, External Drives etc. as of November 2021. So when buying a Flash Drive or a device with a cable attached to it be sure the OEM box has 3.0 or higher on it. When you open the box check the end of the cable for it's color (just to sure you got what you paid for).

Just one thing There is another cable that I am seeing more and more lately and it's also known as a Micro-B connector but is different from the regular micro b connector :confused:

I am seeing these on External drive cases, and card readers, not sure if there is any electrical difference from the older style or it's just a mechanical strengthening setup

I have only seen it on faster cables (usb3.1 plus )

These are actually less common now. They are hardly better than the mini and other micro connectors as far as durability and the ability to stay plugged in.

Where it's practical I'm using and Specifying USB-C connectors as they do seem more robust and the fact that they can be fitted either way up can remove some strain on cables - which is a plus

Just wanted to clear something up. The 5 Gbps quoted for USB 3 Gen 1 isn't just marketing, that is the actual raw bit rate. The specification for the Gen 1 physical layer is 5 Gbps with an 8b/10b encoding. So 500 MB/s theoretical, but overheads for flow control, framing etc reduce that to around 450 MB/s according to the specification. There is no 4800 Mbps I am aware of. It is 5000.

Also, in case you didn't know, Gen 2 encoding is much more efficient as it uses 128b/132b encoding. It is 97% efficient compared to 80% for Gen 1.

I do believe the notion of 4800 Mbps RAW bit rate must have came from claims USB 3.0 is 10x faster than USB 2.0, which is 480 Mbps RAW bit rate., but USB 3 is actually 5000 Mbps RAW bit rate.

Yes, I know it is correct. :D I had the USB spec on file and had read it some years ago, was going quote it, but...
Storage systems and data transfer development, management were what I did for the last 10+ years, so I am familiar with a lot of the protocols, but USB was just out of curiosity.

So you all agree there is nothing behind this 4.8 Mbps, just some misinformation spread through the internet.
