Installation and Upgrade Download Official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft

This tutorial will show you how to download an official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft.

Microsoft provides ISO files for Windows 11 to download. You can use these ISO files to clean install or in-place upgrade Windows 11.


The Flight Hub can also help you keep updated on which Windows 11 builds have an ISO available.

Option One

Download Latest Windows 11 ISO using Media Creation Tool


This will be for a Windows 11 Version 23H2 build 22631.2861 ISO file with install.esd.


1 Click/tap on the Download button below, and click/tap on the Download Now button at Microsoft's site for Create Windows 11 Installation Media. (see screenshot below)

2 Save the MediaCreationTool_Win11_23H2.exe file to your desktop, and run it.

3 If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes.

4 Click/tap on Accept for the license terms. (see screenshot below)

5 Uncheck the Use the recommended options for this PC box. (see screenshot below)

Leaving the Use the recommended options for this PC box checked will have the Media Creation Tool download an ISO that's the same language, edition, and architecture as the current PC.

6 Select the Language and Edition you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

The Windows 11 option includes both the Home and Pro editions. The product key you enter during installation (Windows Setup) is what determines which edition gets installed.

Your digital license or product key determines if Home or Pro gets installed during Windows Setup.

If you skip entering a product key during Windows Setup, then you will be prompted to select to install the Home or Pro edition.

7 Select (dot) ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

8 Select where you would like to save the ISO file to, type in a name you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Save. (see screenshot below)

9 The Windows 11 ISO file will now begin to download. (see screenshot below)

10 When the download has finished, click/tap on the link where you selected to save the ISO file at to open that location, and click/tap on Finish. (see screenshot below)

Option Two

Download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft


This will be for a Windows 11 Version 23H2 build 22631.2861 ISO file with install.wim.


1 Click/tap on the Download button below.


2 Select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO for x64 devices) in the Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices drop menu, and click/tap on Download Now. (see screenshot below)

3 Select the language (ex: "English") you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshot below)

Download Windows 11 Insider ISO from Microsoft


1 Click/tap on the Download button below to go to the Windows Insider Preview Downloads site by Microsoft below,


2 Select the Windows 11 Insider Preview Canary, Dev, Beta, or Release Preview Channel ISO for the build number you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshots below)

4 Click/tap on the 64-bit Download button. (see screenshot below)

Download Windows Server Insider ISO from Microsoft


1 Click/tap on the Download button below to go to the Windows Insider Preview Downloads site by Microsoft below,


2 Select the Windows Server VNext Preview ISO for the build number you want, and click/tap on Confirm. (see screenshots below)

From what I see searching on the subject, looks like they are all sub editions of Enterprise. 🤷‍♂️

Here is a clean install of Dev Build 23606 Window 11 Pro, still showing Enterprise as CompositionEditionID.
The same with a clean install of latest Canary Build 26016.
The digital license on this machine is for Windows 10 Pro, but I have no idea if that determines the ProductName or not. 😎
Some articles on the Web suggest that the Windows 10 still shows for program compatibility. 🤷‍♂️

In my case, I downloaded the new ISO and re-hung it using the same method I used twice before (X:/setup.exe /product server switch). I'll still be grabbing USB sticks for other hardware - such as my Dell i7 (said i7 has 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD, in addition to my old 4 TB platter drive which I moved to the new tower which replaced my old G3258 driven tower when the motherboard and GPU went south).

That is indeed the case - my old G was running Pro for Workstation when the motherboard and GPU went south. The Dell that replaced it is a rebuilt i7 with 32GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and my old 4 TB platter drive which has my old Pro for Workstations install,. I will be therefore running either 11 Pro or 11 Pro for Workstations, while this laptop will be running 11 Home.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

The build number is shown in the post - if you need to shift channels (Beta, Dev, Canary) use the registry entries and the /product server switch - that is how I did it.

For me to get an ISO for build 22631.2861, I had to use the Media Creation tool and it worked just fine. With the direct ISO DL it was giving me the build prior to the latest build.

it depends on when you got it, the previous one was 22631.2428, the direct download yesterday was updated to 22631.2861 same level as MCT.
The only difference is that it has 11 editions included in the install.wim instead of just 7 included in install.esd of the one created by MCT.

What post are you referring to?
There is nothing in the MS download page showing the build# of the direct download ISO for Public release. 😝🤣

I am still surprised with Option 2 (direct iso download), you still have to select the "Henry Ford" option - "Any bit type so long as it is 64bit".

This is a totally pointless selection screen, and is clearly a hangover from Windows 10 where you had to select 32bit or 64 bit. Obviously lazy programming to avoid removing whole screen - simpler to remove 32bit option.
