This tutorial will show you how to download an official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft.

Microsoft provides ISO files for Windows 11 to download. You can use these ISO files to clean install or in-place upgrade Windows 11.

The Flight Hub can also help you keep updated on which Windows 11 builds have an ISO available.

Contents

  • Option Two: Download Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft
  • Option Three: Download Windows 11 Insider ISO from Microsoft
  • Option Four: Download Windows Server Insider ISO from Microsoft

Windows_11_MCT-3.png

Leaving the Use the recommended options for this PC box checked will have the Media Creation Tool download an ISO that's the same language, edition, and architecture as the current PC.

Windows_11_MCT-4.png

6 Select the Language and Edition you want for the ISO file, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

The Windows 11 option includes both the Home and Pro editions. The product key you enter during installation (Windows Setup) is what determines which edition gets installed.

Your digital license or product key determines if Home or Pro gets installed during Windows Setup.

If you skip entering a product key during Windows Setup, then you will be prompted to select to install the Home or Pro edition.

Just curious but I got an ISO file that's 5.11gig. I downloaded the "Windows 11 Insider Preview (Beta Channel) Build 22000.132" cause I didn't see a Windows 11 "Pro" build.

Am I missing something, and is that file size correct?

Thanks.

I didn't see a Windows 11 "Pro" build.
As with the ISOs for Windows 10, the ISO will contain multiple editions (Pro, Home, etc). Use the tutorial to see which editions the ISO contains.

Which one you install is determined at install time. For an in-place upgrade using the ISO it will install whatever edition you are upgrading from.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Thanks. And yeah, I'm aware of that as I've downloaded countless ISO's, just never got on that big. Even the UU Dump file wasn't that big, thus my curiosity :scream:

Thanks.

ISOs downloaded direct from Microsoft tend to be larger than the ones made by the MCT. They always contain an install.wim rather than the more compact install.esd used by the MCT.

I believe the last MS ISO (MCT), that fit on a DVD was... Windows 10 Home x64, version 1909
Non-Insider program.

I don't remember since only used the Media Creation Tool to create the USB install. Never paid attention to size as well since my USB sticks are 16gig minimum. Probably why I'm surprised as I've not created a "DVD" ISO in a while :)

Thanks.

So if I download this .132 iso, can I then use uupdmp with the .160 cumulative update + the Microsoft iso to make a new .160 iso? If so, how?
It would be handy to be able to do this.

Or with DISM?

I don't remember since only used the Media Creation Tool to create the USB install. Never paid attention to size as well since my USB sticks are 16gig minimum. Probably why I'm surprised as I've not created a "DVD" ISO in a while :)

Thanks.

Yeah, I was still trying to hang on to DVDs up until Win 10 v2004. Then I had to switch to ISOs or USB.
Don't ask me why. LOL

I still remember how amazed I was at how much faster a USB stick booted, than a DVD/CD did. :D

I only just switched to USB when Macrium Reflect 8 came out. The MR8 bootable Rescue Media took almost 2 minutes to boot from CD. It took about 7 seconds from USB.
I guess I always trusted DVD/CDs more than USB?

Yeah, I guess we can finally move on from creating DVD installs. That said, I actually was going to create a DVD until I saw the size if this file. I was like WTH. I see I'll be sticking with USB drives :)

Yeah, I had created one since my original intention was to clean install on the backup system. But then I changed my mind and enrolled in the Insiders program and installed from there. Didn't feel like reinstalling all my programs. Plus I wanted to see how that went.

As long as your 3rd party programs and drivers are... tight and clean and non-conflicting... it's hard to beat.

And... for the most part, you get to avoid the dreaded... Settings Beast

Thanks. And yeah, I'm aware of that as I've downloaded countless ISO's, just never got on that big. Even the UU Dump file wasn't that big, thus my curiosity :scream:

Thanks.
When you give your account E-mail at startup, that will show you as a Pro or Home user and then they do not ask for the Product serial number. Also if your computer has a registered number in the BIOS it will automatically create either a Pro or Home operating system This goes all the way back to Windows 7. Incidentally, I tried this version just to see if it would refuse my outdated TPM1.2 and 4th generation CPU. Well, it didn't. So I guess I will continue using Windows 11 until I cannot or I get a new computer. LOL. "I'm Back!"

While the ISO allow me to get off the DEV channel, and onto the win11 BETA channel?
I'm going to need to do that, or a fresh install of W10, since my hardware is shown as deficient.

The only way off the Dev channel is a clean install of Win 10. Otherwise you could down load the ISO for Win 11 from the site with the Beta ISO as your install, but, you would have to quit the Insiders as a Dev and rejoin as a Beta user. It would still be a clean install.

Would I need to Quit insiders before or after I enact the ISO to go from 11 dev to 11 beta? and, if I do an "in-place" rather than clean install, will I lose my Applications?

The way I understand it you would need to quit before. Then rejoin. Also if you tried to save any applications doing it that way you will find when you go to update that Your computer is still looking at it as a Dev, even though you quit. I experienced this myself a while ago. That is why you need a clean install, either Win 10 or Win 11.

LOL. "I'm Back!"

Thank you Bob, yes I'm aware of the procedures. I was just startled at how big the ISO download was. As I noted earlier, my last few downloads came via MCT where I created a USB install.

And yes, not surprising just about any machine can get 11 now as Microsoft gathers the data to finalize the OS. The true test however will be the RTM release and whether Microsoft starts enforcing the new requirements

I'm currently 11 on both my main laptop, and my backup system, both of which have 7th gen CPUs (i7-7600U & i7-7700K). No issues with TPM as all my machines have already had firmware TPM 2.0. Also my main rig has a 9th gen CPU so definitely no worries there :)

Thanks.
