Solved Drive (NVMe) replacement?

Honestly, unless doing very specific tasks, you aren't going to see any tangible performance difference upgrading from what you have to something new. Your benchmarks could look better, but it probably won't amount to any real world performance difference.

Sorry, you're correct.

I don't own one. I misinterpreted the Service Manual. It clearly states that the second M.2 slots only accepts 2230.

I'd probably just install/replace with a M2. 2230 and M2. 2280, not for performance but for space.

Scanning your previous posts does not show the capacity of you,r current M2.2230 so it is not clear how much space your need. The M2.2230's are half size cards and are not price competitive. If space is the issue why not just get a 2TB M2.2280 which would be less expensive than a 1TB M2.2280 plus a replacement M2.2230.

Your recommendation of 1X 1 TB M2230 and X1 2TB M2280, would make me less dependent on external USB HDDs, thumbs etc., and IF I could get hold of decent brands like in your case, might make the laptop a bit more responsive. The stock M2230 came with the 512 GB size, on which I ran the tests posted. (Though have a 1 TB M2280, which I got pulled).
The Crystal disk info shows that laptop supports both PCI 3 and 4...am I correct?

To clarify, I was suggesting just adding a 2TB M.2280 and keeping your existing M.2280. If you really need the extra space then you could replace the M.2230. A 1TB M.2230 is likely the same cost as a 2TB M.2280.
No idea about the PCI support.

2280:

WDC Black SN850 or SN850X. These are PCI-E 4.0 drive s that will carry over into future builds.
Samsung 980 Pro or 980. Bot are PCI-E 4.0 too.

Other good 2280 brands are:
Sabrent
SK Hynix

There are many reviews of any of the above. Anandtech has good reviews.

Thanks for sharing the brands models, but my laptop supports only Gen 3 PC1 x4 and not Gen 4 X4.

To the best of my knowledge, pcie 4 nvme are backward compatible with pcie 3.

I think the idea is that if you get a pcie 4 nvme now, then you could transfer it to your next machine in a couple of years which will likely be able to benefit from the pcie 4 speed.

So if they are not much more expensive it could be worth getting pcie 4 disk

They are backwards compatible with PCI-E 3.,0 (I have a WDC Black PCI-E 4.0 SN850 running on my PCIE 3.0 board). Anyhow, those brands also have good PCI-E Gen 3 nvme ssd.

You are correct, backwards compatible. So I would be getting the speeds for PCIx 3 using a PCIx4 NVMe SSD . And correct would be a good investment.

But I can find a PCI x4, M.2 2230 that is supported on one slot, other can hold both M.2230 OR M2280.

Do you get slightly more speeds than PCI X 3.0 NVMe SSD using a PCI X4 SSD, OR no difference?

I get better much better than my older Samsung 960 and faster than my Samsung 980 PCI-E 3.0. The maximum you can get on PCI-3.0 is about 3500 MB/s. Here is a comparison between my WDC PCIE-4.0 black (on PCI-E 3.0) and a PCI-E 3.0 Samsung 980. Mind you that the WDC SN850 has on-board SRAM buffer but the Samsung 980 does not. Instead it uses your computer RAM as a Host memory buffer).

This is what I got on my stock M2230 M2. NVMe PC1 x 3.0.

Seeing our results, I definitely need to replace both...…..BUT I cannot find a PCI x4 M2230.
