I am assuming the drives have 3 form factors.....2230, 2240 and 2280 as shown in the link?

To my understanding, 2230, 2242, and 2280 are standard M.2 form factors.

I recall reading recently that some new M.2 PCI-E 5.0 drives may be 25mm wide, rather than 22. Sounds like a potential compatibility nightmare.

Larger the size more increase in speeds, as per the table. 2 TB are the fastest. Don't know about their buffering as mentioned with WD 850 PCI 4 drives.

BTW, Micron is a very good brand, used it on my old Dell XPS laptop. :-)

Thanks for sharing the link.

Would 22240 form factor fit in the 2230 slot?

Depends on the slot. Some accommodate different lengths. That 40 means 40mm length. (2240 = 22mm wide x 40mm long). that 10mm difference - not so sure, but if it says it's 2330 I would guess not.

Benchmarks make 3500 look way better than 2400. But honestly with normal day to day tasks you likely won't notice anything.

I have a pci gen 4 board and a wd sn850 2tb drive. When it started to fill, rather than buying another 2tb sn850 for around $380 (at the time), I bought a 2TB sata ssd for around $160 (less than 1/2 the price). Yeah, benchmarks showed my WD Sn850 hitting around 7000MB/s, and my sata only hitting 530MB/sec or so. That's 14x slower. But I put some of my games onto the SATA and the difference is negligible. Load times for call of duty were like 12 seconds on the sata versus 11.2 seconds on the sn850 nvme.

So, I tend to keep my games on the cheaper ssd, and save the faster storage for my vms, where I did myself copying .vhdx files to and fro and benefiting from the performance uplift.

The problem is having the right standoffs. I don't see any indication (in the manual) that ones for 2242 M.2 cards are present.
