Drivers after a fresh install of Windows 11

That's really interesting, cheers for explaining it.

I had actually instructed the person who built the machine to put Windows 10 on it as I was unsure if all of my programs would work properly on 11. He acknowledged that and agreed to put 10 on.

What does he go and do? Just installs 11 without even telling me. Pretty bizarre behavior. I couldn't believe it when I arrived to collect it and said OK I'd give it a shot and if it didn't work out that he'd have to revert to 10. But so far, so good I really like Windows 11.
That was a good move on his part as you will have longer life with 11. My machine is just running great on 10, and is rock solid. I use it for gaming and running vms. No sense in upgrading it for me at the moment. I run 11 on another computer, so I get used to everything in 11.

Hi I am posting this in this section as I didn't get a reply in another thread.

I have done a clean install of Windows 11. I had some questions and if some experienced users on here could help, that would be really appreciated:

When I got to the desktop I got a pop-up asking did I want to install Armoury Crate. I said yes. But got some error so I guessed that was due to Windows Updates not being installed yet. Anyway, after the updates, I got Armoury Crate installed. Is this just for the motherboard? Mine is the ASUS ROG Strix X670E-E Gaming WiFi.

In Armoury Crate in Tools/Drivers I downloaded and installed:

AMD Chipset Driver
AMD Graphics Driver
Intel Bluetooth Driver
Intel I225 LAN Driver
Intel Wi-Fi Driver
Realtek Audio Driver

Should this be all I need or would I have to install additional ones from the drivers page for my motherboard?

I also installed the drivers for my GPU, minus the option for GeForce Experience as I read a good few comments online saying it is mainly bloatware.

Then I installed iCUE, which seems fine too.

Samsung Magician is just an optional app is it? Or is it recommended to have this?

Is the general practice to do a Macrium Reflect backup of the current OS once these are all installed before going and installing all of my main programs?

Thanks so much
NEVER install the drivers in Armoury Crate. They are terribly outdated. Download them from MoKiChU, he's provided the latest drivers that WORK on the ASUS forums for a very long time.

All looks good to me :-) As Ghot already explained - graphics drivers for both integrated Radeon and Dedicated Nvidia. You mentioned something about wifi drivers but it didn't show on your screenshot which ones. If Windows installed wifi drivers and they work I'd go with that.

Quickie guide...
That quick guide is very handy, thanks.

For some reason, I always though you had to make one of the Rescue Media USB's in order to revert to one of the backups. That seems very straightforward in that guide. It looks far handier and better than the Windows System Restore method too.

I think I will create a few backups as I go. I have about 40% of my programs installed, so may be worthwhile to do one now. Then when I get a few more installed and they're working all OK, I'll do another backup. Some programs that I use can be finnicky and can tend to break or mess up, so this will be great practice.

A good habit to get into as you say Ghot!

The rescue media, is so you can access your backups... even if Windows won't boot.

I did an MR backup, changed the computer name to Hazel and then did a restore. No problem. Of course, it reverted the computer name to its original.

I like your name, it's ageless and classless and tells me nothing about you except that you are probably female. You may have hazel eyes but I think all babies are born with blue eyes?

Lol. I might call my own computer Hazel now :-)

So it changes the computer back to the original name. Which is maybe why I instinctively would do a second back up after changing the name. So sounds like that's what you need to do Redlad. A second back up.

The only real advantage it has is for checking for, downloading, and installing the latest firmware for your SSD. And that's only of benefit for the newest Samsung SSDs (or if your's has never had a firmware update). The older ones should have had their last firmware release a while back.

Hi @Hazel123 @kelper thanks for the replies.

The main reason I was asking was in relation to a program I was going to be installing, which was done through a bat file that someone had created. So I asked if it depended on a certain computer name and it actually doesn't, so good to know.

When you do a Windows fresh install, does the PC get given a new unique name?

Currently mine is DESKTOP-(then some numbers and capital letters)

The only real advantage it has is for checking for, downloading, and installing the latest firmware for your SSD. And that's only of benefit for the newest Samsung SSDs (or if your's has never had a firmware update). The older ones should have had their last firmware release a while back.
The ones I have are:
980 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB - Windows is installed on this
970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 SSD 2TB - This is for my data

Yes it usually gives it a name like that after a new install. I change it shortly after install - usually to the computer model or something - so I know which computer is which on my antivirus website as have the av installed on four machines - and can see which licence is which.
