Solved Duplicate User ID's

After a recent update, autologin stopped working and shows duplicate logins, one with my email, the one it should be, the other with my Windows User name which is the 5 characters long. When I login using the Windows 5 character one, it goes to the one it should be, krutzy62@gmail.com.

I have tried everything that I could find.

I have enable the require password box, shutdown, powered up, logged in, disabled the check box, and it didn't work as stated here:

I also edited the registry per: Configure Windows to automate logon - Windows Server

If I go into the registry under ...\CurrentVersion\Profile List I have only 5 entries:
SystemProfile
LocalService
NetworkService
"myprofile"
Administrator

I did try using the Administrator account on a whim and disabled it.

When I reboot I get the windows one (has blank avatar vs. my avatar) with the message "The user name or password is incorrect. Try again". So it is like it is trying to autologin with the duplicate, the wrong one, account.

Anyone have an idea??

I think I solved it. It turns out after fiddling for a day that the accounts had different passwords and neither matched the MS Account login. So I set them all to the same and it appears to be working now.

As for glasskuter, that was the thing. netplwiz only showed guest and one of the accounts. It didn't show a duplicate. Thank you for the reply,

What glasscutter meant was that if you had set up netplwiz to automatically sign in with an incorrect name and/or password, then that name will appear at the lower left of the sign in screen. To all intents and purposes it looks just like a real account, but it does not actually exist. Here's a non-existent account that I deliberately set up to sign in automatically.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package. Also running Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds as a native boot .vhdx.

What I had were two accounts with the same name on the screen sample you displayed. When I went to netplwiz only one appeared. That is where I was stimied.

As I said, an apparent second account can appear on the sign in screen if you have previously used netplwiz to set up an automatic sign in, but with incorrect details. It's not an actual account on the PC so won't be in the list shown by netplwiz. If so, ticking the box for 'Users must enter a username and password to use this PC' will turn off the automatic sign in and make this 'ghost' account disappear.

Correct that did work, once I synced the passwords all up. Before I got the passwords synced up that didn't work. I tried before that before a couple of times and had the same problem until I got the password straightened out.
Now how that happened - beats me! :-)

I've often seen users with MS accounts having that problem. As you note, password syncing seems to be the issue.
Mine are all local accounts so I only see it if I set it up deliberately.
